Jack.308 40
So first trip of the ferreting season today. Took the new kits out sadly lost all my ferrets last year so all new kits. Was doing a nice little paddock full of sets done around 4 out of 10 was a little still over grown but muscled on plenty of well used holes fresh shit everywhere. On the 1 set around 10 holes I could here thumping so tried an extra ferret incase they were running the ferret about but still know avail. So my question do ferrets need education to learn to go deeper. They just don't seem to know what there doing piping in and out spent around 4 hours swapping and trying them but it wasn't happening. Any advice? Quote Link to post
johnrthrfrd 223
Like every thing they need to learn there trade they would of just been running around the top of the sets and not going down to were the rabbits are best to put them in with a well worked ferret so they follow it down and get the idea if you can't do that just a case of keep entering them till they latch on to a rabbit some never learn and don't make the grade not all ferrets work as a lot of people think that's why when you get a good worker there worth there weight in gold. 1 Quote Link to post

CraignTod 278
Being all kits the rabbits might of just sat in a stop end and refused to bolt, i find some ferrets are hangers on and some will just resurface after a few mins. You just need to learn ur ferrets and next time use the hanger on and dig to him/her Quote Link to post
tsteve9999 456
I've found a lot of ferrets wont go down the near vertical runs so they don't do the lower levels where the rabbits are. Since I've put a few pieces of that corrugated drainage pipe in their run at very steep angles I've noticed a big difference. Quote Link to post
Jax13 251
Mine were last year's kits and the first couple of outings they seemed to skim the surface rather than going down. I would imagine it's nothing more than experience and possibly a little bit of apprehension on the ferrets part being young and inexperienced. After a couple of outings mine started to go deeper into the warrens and pulled out better numbers than the first couple of visits. Just persevere and give them chance to learn what it is about.
