Dan McDonough 560
I'm curious about Laikas and am wondering if anyone has used them as a base for a lurcher breeding. All info welcome. I've never hunted with one. Quote Link to post

Bought for buttons, imported and peddled for thousands till the arse falls out of em and every rag-arse in the citys have em and the pounds are full to bursting.... Quote Link to post
Dan McDonough 560
If any of you have a minute there is a very good documentary in YT called "Happy People". It's a four part series but nearly all of the talk about the Laikas is in the first one. There are several strains and most folks in the US that have them own a West Siberian Laika. They are larger and are more for big game. I'm a little more interested in the East Siberian Laika that you'll see in the Happy People doc. Those are used for catching food and pine martin for the fur market. It's the toughness and the treeing (barking on a tree when game is up for those of you who don't use that kind of dog). By the way, though just about everything that is Russian is a little depressing, it's hard not to admire the freedom these people in the documentary are enjoying. If you like the simple life, they have it for sure Also, while I have your brains working (I wouldn't mind hearing from a European perspective) why in the hell has everything I ever seen having to do with Russia so damn depressing? You would think that in a country of that size someone, somewhere, someone could take four minutes of video that shows Russian people that are NOT on the edge of dispare. Quote Link to post

Ideation 8,216
The last bit of your post, is I think related to the cold war. When I moved to Eastern Europe, I realised that every video, film etc i'd been shown, was grey, cold, dull, depressing, bread ques, hard faced women etc etc etc, it was all a left over affectation of the cold war propaganda. When I arrived and it was 30+ degrees C, there were lots of hot women in bikinis, and everyone liked a good drink, some good food and a good dance. . . . . . I realise i'd been duped! 6 Quote Link to post
Dan McDonough 560
Well that's a relief, they're hording quite a few good looking girls over there. I thought maybe it was to keep the outsiders away from the goods. Quote Link to post

Dan McDonough 560
I'm in Wisconsin near Lake Michigan and I don't have to sneak much. It's not that I can't find people around here that would know some things about Laikas. Its that I would like to find a lurcher man that has some experience with them. I would like to hear his opinion of the dogs. There aren't many lurcher men around this part of the world. Quote Link to post
forest of dean redneck 11,606
What would you be hoping to gain from one? As there's plenty of scent /treeing types over there that can obviously cope with weather and terrain in the usa,and I expect with the commoner ones there's more chance of it have being tried? Or with staghound . Quote Link to post
