100% Fit ?

Recommended Posts

I've read loads of threads on here over the years and it all ways pops up about 100% fit. How can any dog man know if a dog is 100% fit or not. Boxers and top athletes are nearly there but U.S. Mere dog men how can we know if a dog is at its total peak. A boxer will train for 6/8 weeks to be in prime condition but can't keep that prime as it takes to much out of the body.

So is it a sentence that we all spit out or not.

the nearest ive seen is trailhounds. those boys know how to condition a dog.

Peak of fitness can only be maintained for a very short period of time. That is why athletes be they human ,dog or horse are gradually built up to an event, any attempt to stay at peak fitness for a l

.

run hard twice a week behind few decent hares they be fit, that running behind cars only keeps their nails right, lol

My old bitch is normally at her best when she looks just off top condition I personally think when a dog is pumped anlooks ripped this is when they are more likely to pull something our get injuries but thatz just my opinion on my dog like humans they are all different you the owner should be able to tell when your dog is fit

i think its all subjective. lads say their dog is fit when its back in order after a summer layoff and a lot of works been put in to get them back into condition. only repeated working will get them truly fit from there.

as for recovery rate, a 10 second run is easier to recover from than a 1 minute run so thats different too.

we all know when our dogs are in form.

I agree with all posts you recon boys but I personally think it's very grey area. I've known boys with staffs and pits who condition the dogs to the peak ready for work. But the actual knowledge as when an animal is in top peak condition is something else. Maybe the same goes for race horses etc.

Plus I think we can't keep a dog in 100% fitness for 5/6 months as the toll taken on the dogs body will have a negative effect.

Though i know what you mean, in the field there are too many variables BUT as said, a lurcher should ONLY be judged on what it catches and it dont matter how feckin fit you think your dog is, if it catches feck all, it's shite...!

I suppose it's the same with gun dogs. sheep dogs etc bosun if it does the job that's good enough. I just find it strange that folk say it's 100% fit when it can't possible so.

True Bosun after a long cold day or night out on the land a plate of boiled tatties, processed peas and little else beside is of no comfort regardless of fitness or fictitious bloodlines

theres a fine line between being super fit and fecked. as has allready been said the only way to get and keep a dog fit is to be out there working it.

looking at a dog does not give you a idea of how fit they actually are, ive seen some dogs that are fed a great diet and look true pictures of health and fittness but as soon as you start working them havent got much in the tank at all they just look the part. on the flip side ive seen dogs that look as though they aint going to be fit but they have loads in the tank and probably look as though they aint the best as they are just slightly tired looking from having there chicklins worked off day in and day out.

That last bit trigger do you maybe think they tired or being clever keeping stores in the reserve knowing what the night might be like and know it might be expected tomorrow night also or combo of both ??? If get what i mean

Very few if any knows what 100%fitness on a lurcher, iv always thought I had fit dogs, and truth is they are fit enough for what I do, they can take decent bags regular on lamp and still go ferreting in morning and things, but start talking to folk and asking questions and you will see lurchers are awesome animals, it's known they can take 15 hares a night, then go hiking the next day, folk have done it, are doing it. Facts are very few folks have enough drive to see exactly what a lurcher has got in tank, obviously all lurchers are different, smaller quicker types will fade earlier than heavy set lurchers with lots of base blood, but you get any dog and from a pup get it nice an fit and keep at it, then 9 times out 10 it's you that will wanna go home before the dog, how fit do we actually need a lurcher? Do we need all the stamina a lot of dogs have?
