Mine scents a lot but his only young and he will soon learn day is for scenting night is for looking down the beam hopefully. I noticed yesterday ferreting in the morning he was walking along 20 yards out from the hedge looking out to field lol but he soon got back into day time mode and got the honker going.I don't like mine going out of sight so I TRY to keep him close

I've had some great catches off the lamp there a fine balance from an experienced dog knowing when it's right to follow scent at night or to return as usually expected. 99% time they come back after it gone but that 1% I don't make a big effort to get them back as 9/10 she would pull something in the dark that she thought was worth following for. Fine line tho

Cheers do you keep dog on lead when lamping ?? I do till I get close to where I think something could be there once he's on scent nowts stopping him he's only 11 month n I've only had him 4 weeks now still alot of learning for both

If you don't want him doing it then keep him on the lead and only slip him on stuff what you have both seen in the beam. And make sure he's seen it.

He will soon learn that he doesn't need his nose at night and start using his eyes and looking down the beam.

Some lads like their dogs to use their noses at night the same as in the day. Each to their own. Whatever suits you.

Mine always on slip at night. Mine will only follow on rarely but like i said when she does she made some good catches off beam. As hes a pup id curb any scenting at night for now. Let him learn the real reason your out at night to work the light with his eyes. Then when hes experienced take it from there

Trouble is you don't know what scent he's following, could be rabbit, fox, deer or even just a rat or hedgehog!

Keep him on the slip and pull him off the scent and keep walking and don't let him off the slip until you've both seen the quarry in the lamp. Otherwise it turns into a night time mooch not a lamping session. I'll be keeping mine on the slip for at least the first season before I start letting him off the slip and training to walk at heel.

My last dog caught a few things in the dark. Usually when we'd finished the night and heading home, him off lead. This one always has his nose in he air.

I'd say my best was the staff  she crossed fields and skipped spots to get to where her nose said and she was never wrong ;)

Daytime, let them at it. Nothing better than watching a dog work upwind to its quarry.

Daytime everything's tucked in tight to cover so the dog needs to use its nose to find.

Night time the quarry will be out in the open so you need to encourage the dog to get its head up and watch the light.
