Entry 12G Shot Gun Advice

I have been invited to a shoot with the choice if I want to join, I haven't got my license or know much about shotguns. So I was looki for some advice on which gun would be a good entry gun l. Also I am going to get some lessons, I am from the North east is there anywhere you would advise to go.

A good shotgun to start with is a Lanber o/u can pick them up quite readily and cheap

One that fits you, I have said this before a hundred times, a £75,000 Purdey will be useless compared to a £200 Baikal if the former does not fit and the latter does, so in short, dont worry too much about price/name, make sure you go to a reputable gun dealer who knows his stuff, explain that you are new to the sport, and you would like to find something reasonably priced,but emphasise you will not be buying on a whim, I cannot stress enough the importance of correct gun fit, if you do find a bargain,that looks fantastic but does not fit properly, gently negotiate having the gun altered to fit, into the price, best of luck and enjoy

How much are you looking to spend, and assume it's 12g?

You need to know this as well as me!

Minimum price in a gun shop for a used OU that's not a 'nail' would be £500>750.

Minimum price for something half decent with an 'easy' not to painful trade in prospect in £900>1000 (This should be your optimum zone if possible).

After that the prices go North big time, a GOOD Berretta costing £3,000 & up second hand.

A cheap not so very nasty Spanish side by side non ejector might be had for £150>200.

Also there are 12g Semi-Auto's and other calibres 20 bore, 28 bore .410 et al but don't go there at this stage.

Can't beat an Escort 12g Semi-auto! Cheap, and fully adjustable with the spacers provided for length and cast! Plus if your learning, easy on the shoulder!

For a first time try going to a shop , asking them to look at a gun and don't be shy to try everything in sight , once you find a gun that feels comfortable and is a good fit , take a note of the measurements of it , this is a free fitting in effect ( but is only a guide ) then you are able to look around for a cheap gun that will roughly fit you , any alterations from this point will only be minor and a lot less costly , a baikal or a Winchester 96 are a good reliable cheap gun which would do you well enough to get you started , personally I tend to tell people to avoid auto's for a while whilst they get to understand gun safety

Sorry I'm not sure what advise your after , but from the looks of it your thinking about putting either night vision or a thermal scope onto a shotgun , plese DONT , not only is it illegal to hunt game after dark with a shotgun , but it is also extremely dangerous ,

If you are just after advise on a good night vision scope then I am personally selling a very good one very cheaply

There are several versions of the General license , all covering different areas of shooting , foxes are on the pest species like rabbit and feral

it is very obvious enough that foxes are a pest species and not game , but I didn't bring foxes up you did ,

As for the night vision , well that post has been removed but discussing night vision on a topic for a beginners 12 gauge shotty could lead to all sorts of misinterpretation , which is why I said I'm not sure what they was asking

fair enough shotgunner using a shotgun after dark is a handy close range fox tool for those who don't have centrefire rifles

 

As already said gun fit is most important, maybe go to a clay ground and see what kind of shotgun suits you? I find a nice light side by side best if wandering around game shooting - my 20 bore is very light and great for this.
