neil cooney 10,416
IMO the colouration is nothing to do with how mild or severe a winter is. the blue hare has many shades of pelage, this is to spilt the odds of them being able to hide from predators no matter what the conditions. If it snows then the browner ones are more at risk, if it doesn't snow then the whiter ones are more at risk. it's Mother nature edging her bets IMO..... They won't be moulting for a long while yet.... That's interesting as IMO the Irish Hare in a hard Winter definitely does tend to be lighter in colour. I know that scientifically that that doesn't make sense but I see them daily. The last time I seen white Hares or mostly white Hares was 6 or 7 years ago when Hunting was cancelled for a few weeks because of severe weather. The Gun Clubs imposed a voluntary ban on shooting the same year. We seen pied or fully white Hares a few times a week then. None since.

neil cooney 10,416
What I love about that photo is the lines on her coat where she's been flying through the heather. Good detail. Plus the look in her eye.

J Darcy 5,871
It's not common to see two hares this close. And it's even rarer to photograph it....
