just wondering what age would you pull your dogs from working the feild , or do you just let them carry on with the thing they love to do.

cheers everyone happy hunting.

Hi there Shina

This is my old saluki x called Sal she is 14 years old in this photo it was taken four days before she died.

She loved to work all the way to the end, she will always be sadly missed.

So my opinion just let them carry on doing the thing they love to do.

Happy Hunting

Cheers Stoney

I wouldn't attempt to lamp my old ones: its a hard dangerous business, ditto hare flushing, but a little ferreting or bushing they just love, as long as the weather's not too cold. Just an hour out a day they get, the 10 and 13 year olds, but they'd sulk if I didn't take them. Use common sense: if the dog is stiff and sore after its been out then its done too much, though oldies often get a bit arthritic anyway, like us! Cod Liver Oil, Evening Primrose Oil, Glucosamine Sulphate all help with old joint problems. That and a good meat based diet: apparently steamed nettles are good for arthritis as well.

Don't let old dogs get cold or wet and if they do put a coat on them or under a heat lamp when you get home. A dog that has a warm draught free kennel or bed will last longer than one that is continually cold in its bed.
