snoopdog 1,256
a simple question ...if you could get the same amount of game in the daytime as you do on the lamp ....would you do more daytime hunting ...or would you still go out on the lamp as much as you do .....we all know there more game about at night ....or is it it easier to spot ....i can walk for miles and only see a few hares ..i know theres plenty about but but they are in the cover mostly threw the day same goes for rabbits in certain areas in which i hunt ......i know theres other reasons why people lamp ..... .....but lets say its perrmission and all game is legal to hunt with dgos .......my opinion is ..its a better dog that can catch 10 rabbits through the daytime than a dog catching 20 bunnies at night for obvious reasons there no artificial light to confuse the quarry for starters .....now before you all jump down my throat i love lamping as much as the next man ...but i prefer daytime ........whats your opinions would you go out more through the day if you could catch as much game ....alot off folk lamp also ..because its dark earlier in the hunting season and they have to work through the day ....like i do ....if i didnt have to work ...i for one would do a lot more daytime hunting ... socks 32,253
funny enough i was talking with chalkwarren and the big fish about this today ... i love my daytimr hunting it tests the dogs hunting up ability its marking running etc etc etc its tests your fieldcraft skills and the obviouse one that ferreting is hard work at night ... as a youngster i would crave the dark windy nights ... now after a full days work i get home and my missus makes me a spread fit for a king and i grab a beer from the fridge and i sit down and chill out ... then i see the weather pick and i uummm and aaarrrr and then think i'l have another beer .... dont get me wrong i have plenty of nights out but not a 1/4 of what i used to do as a young buck .... but i am probably spoilt as i have thousands of acres of permission on my doorstep where i can work my dogs day in day out .......... bowers1986 3
During the day the quarrys more of a challenge for the dog although I do like a spot of lamping i think day time hunting is more of a challenge and give both quarry and the dog near enough an equal chance.(especially the Hare~PRE BAN OF COURSE) :ok:....All really depends if you like the Course or just the Kill Edited November 17, 2007 by bowers1986 Quote Link to post

Giro 2,648
I prefer daytiming but was on a bit today saw mabie ten hares they were flighty only flushed two And i walked miles and i mean miles but can go on the lamp and seee ten in one feild ... Daytime rabbittin is top class but you need the ground and the numbers I like the lamp cause you can really test the dogs see how much running they have in them daytime my dogs always got plenty left night time i could collapse her.. today and yest been ratching with lurcher and ferrets bolting the odd one no nets good crack done 2 days on the bounce but Tommorow night i will be out with the lamp. Lamping is still a skill in it own right a good lamper can vastly improve a average dog knowing the ground the rabbits and just haveing the experaince.. Quote Link to post
snoopdog 1,256
your right giro ...lamping is a skill and theres always room for improvment..theres many off time ive lamped new groung and fecked up because i havent checked it out first ..and would of nailed alot more quarry if i had done the land from an different angle or walked the other way round it and sussed where the quarry is going to bolt to ....gates hedges ect ect .....but its just the same daytime if you walk the land correctly and learn the runs and the escape routes then you have a better day but as you know you can only do this by doing your homwork correctly and visting the land often and learning from your previous mistakes .....there a place where i go daytime bunnying and if i go a certain way i can stand a watch the lurcher and terrier working the cover from a good veiw point and get decent numbers ..but as i learned from my mistakes the first few times off walking it ,,and only got the odd one .....theres skill and knowing the lie off the land in both forms of hunting day or night ... snoopdog 1,256
the dales is a big place ....theres good hunting and there fnatastic hunting up there ..but just like anywhere else you got to know where to look ....in certain places is dodgy running for the dogs leg snapping materal ...there alot of obsticals lime stone paving we call it,,, the bunnies bolt down them they are like crevies in the limestone rocks... iam up there a least once a week and i mean at least ..... .....theres warrens that big that you would need ten ferrets to work em ..and when you walk you on them you can feel the ground give underneath your feet theres that many tunnels runs what ever you want to call them ..and thats no bull Quote Link to post
Giro 2,648
Is it true there bits in the dales you just roll up and pay the farmer a fiver and get on there land?? Or is that a urban myth?? Quote Link to post
