Ruptured Cranial Cruiate Ligament

afternoon lads

had my dog down the vets yesterday hes ruptured cranial cruiate ligament its completely snapped the vet said there's not way it will grow back she wants me to keep him caged for 6 weeks and gave me a pain killer to see if any tissue grows around the joint and holds it if not he will have to go under the knife but as hes a heavier dog there not much chance this will happen ,has anyone else,s dog had this injury and how did it heal,the vet said there's a good chance he wont be running anywhere near like he was before the injury :/ just the way it goes i suppose

shame as hes only a young dog this season would of been a good one for him as he started off very well

do they not put like a elastic band thing in to repair the ligament ,and send you away with some meticam on total rest ,not to sure but even slight ligemant damage is bad news as it is long road to recovery atb bobza

thats what they will do mate yh cost around £500 but she said that might not even work if not there's is another op they can have but its alot more complicated and will cost a couple of thousand and i dont have that money at the moment thats for sure,also said he will develop arthritis early in life

With a young dog one would consider trauma rather than arthritis but a complex area. The link gives lots of good info.

thanks mate ill have a look through it now,she said he had done a proper job on it she held the leg and moved the joint and was surprised she said to get the amount of movement out of it that she did the dogs are sedated and they have to put alot of pressure on the leg to do it so not looking good

I had a lurcher x lurcher bitch , that had the same injury the did the op it was called a tie/over something like that. she was 4 year old and been good dog on all quarry, she was about 24 in 50 odd lb looked just like a brindle greyhound , she never ran proper again so was just kept as a pet till she died 14 year old. but looking back is it any real life more so when there a young' dog to be just kept not doing what they love which is chasing game. If i had it happen again , I would have really to think honest about it future keeping it, as most people don't have all that kennel room do they, ok if you got loads of room and the dog been a good'un you make time. but young dog -pup you have to look at the big picture being honest after all there working dogs 1st , pets 2nd .!!

We have experienced similar injuries to our own running dogs,...and the prognosis, for a full recovery is not good. These days, I only keep my curs as worker/pets ,.so I could maybe live with the situation...it is difficult I know,..but you must decide,... if you can

i no mate that's what im just trying to make my mind up on hes a young dog not even 2 yet still has a lot of years left in him and its not fair him spending most of that either in pain or dossed up on meds all the time because she said he will get arthritis early it will be hard for me tho as he is my first working dog that's been my own iv ran other dogs but they have been my dads and iv put a lot of time into him,but i suppose that's what you have to deal with in this game dogs get injured its just what happens

I wouldnt run him again after this kind of injury. I bet the vet told you it is also prone to re injury most recommend lead walks for running dogs after op due to the risk in re injury. As lurchers/sighthounds put them under more strain then any other breed type. Not something i would want to risk after a £1000 op pet pts is the right option

My dog done similar thing I got the op done cost us a grand so far, done it the end of last season the bone man said he will work again but not to his full potential. Wish I had PTS some times when he's missing work but still good hopes so it's wether u want to take the gamble, It wasn't elastic the vet used its some kind of super cord, were bouts are you ?

The bone man said the stuff he put in is stronger than his ligerment was, mine bust all the ligerments in his knee only skin muscle and bone when I took him in.
