Advice Please

Recommended Posts

I have just taken on a 18 month GWP that was needing rehome to no fault of its own. he is still quite puppyish and has been well looked after and gets on fine with other people and dogs etc.

my question is, does anyone have any advice for bonding with an adult dog and building up trust? their must be others on here who have taken on an older dog? i've only had him a few days and am keeping him of the lead until i am more confident he will actually come back. he hasn't been spooky at all and seems to be taking the change in his stride. any tips would be welcome

cheers, Tom

Hand feed while out , get the dog coming right into your space to eat , not talking bout treats here . Feed him while out with him on long line ,

Don't do any obedience work over the next while it can cause conflict in the dog mind , All positive , don't correct for making contact , such as jumping up ,

It takes time to build trust

Manage manage manage , so the dog can't put himself into situations where he will f**k up , been one step ahead is the name of the game , gradually it will sink into the dogs head that you are his avenue to everything , training is a doddle after that

Don't force the recall just make your space completely positive ,

Enjoy him it'll be a learn curve for the both of you best of luck ,

I would do a bit of basic obedience so he is working for treats just nice and easy recall sit stay etc I think it will help I know it conflicts with Casso advice but we do a fair bit of rescue/ fostering for the labradoodle trust (Someone has to whatever your opinions) and from my experience dogs live day to day and they sharp get on with life
