Lol I was brought up 100 meters from the river Tawe one of the best salmon rivers in Wales I've caught them with nets snare hands and rod, there's been lots of times where I had to have a shower in my old girls house because the bath was full of ice and salmon lol ... Salmon paste is the killer for salmon ... and not the stuff you spread on your sandwiches walshie lol ......

 

 

Thank you for your input Mr 1 1/2 oz. One of the locals down the river was talking about salmon paste or "jam" as we call it in these parts. He said it was ok for sewin and trout but it was shite for salmon.

 

Either way, it doesn't explain why something that doesn't eat takes a bait.

Alway thought paste was for sea trout as well

Walshie, they do not eat because they cannot, their stomachs atrophy so it is impossible for them to eat. What does happen though is that the memory of feeding is still there and they will go through the motions of eating (taking a bunch of worms, snapping at a fly drifting past their noses etc;) Most Salmon fishermen will tell you that the longer they have been in the river the harder they are to catch, as if that feeding instinct recedes with the time they are in the river.

 

They will also tell you you sometimes have to goad a Salmon into taking the bait, you may put a fly / spinner / bunch of worms past it's nose twenty or thirty times and it will not take, and then as if it has had enough the next pass and it will grab the bait.

That makes sense the goading as a kid I was casting a spinner across a big pool with my cousin to see how far we could cast and reeling in full pelt. We were at this for a fair while when all of a sudden as I reeled in a dam big fish grabbed hold and did a whooping jump with it. I guess it had got pissed off of this thing wizzing by its snout. It came off as I was reeling in so fast gave us quite a surprise

Never heard of anybody catching salmon on bead, heard of plenty people catching salmon to make it lol it's best for trout imo

Perhaps you had a bath full of ice and sea trout instead?

They were definitely salmon ... Long black slimy things that look like snakes ???
