Moxy, I think you're confusing the two differing looks of male newts. It is without doubt a male. Look at the spots on the flanks.

When newts decide that they are going to head for their hibernaculum they change their body. They shed a new layer of skin that makes them less exposed to dessication from the elements and prepares them for winter.

 

The male newts only has his gaudy frills and striking colours when he is in the stadium of aquatic life, i'e when he's breeding. They look totally different at other times of year..... :victory: :victory:

 

You will never see large spots on any female newts in the UK..... :thumbs: :thumbs:
