Blueboybilly 164
Hi, With the many variations of Lurcher that can be used for different types of hunting and I was wondering what people considered to be the key attributes of a dog used specifically for Lamping. And any training tips that can be employed while bringing a dog on to use predominantly as a lamping dog. Thanks Quote Link to post

bird 9,872
( speed, agilty, strike, ) and good recovery from runs , and good retriever , you need all these to have good lamping dog. its prob my main from of hunting , I do bit of mooching and the odd day ferreting, but lamping my main thing and as been for 30 years . like most your always striving for the perfect lamp dog, if that's your main thing, I am still looking lol, got young dog now Buck , he no world beater lol, but he does very good for what he is a big dog. the x you want up to each person , there's plenty of good types out there all diffnt xs, but one thing for me is determination a dog who gives 100% on his 1st run as to his last run , that's the quality = mind set I like in a good lamping dog Quote Link to post
Buttons 140
Speed Stamina No nose Recall Retreave Quote Link to post
straight2hand 303
Obedience in a lamping dog because it is no good running a dog that doesn't work to heel on the beam, retrieve or recall as it could be killed in the field, the dog must be stock broken, jump barb fences, and tackle all quarry (Preban) so must be keen as mustard. It's a hard balance sometimes to get a great lamper but when you get one its worth all hard work! 1 Quote Link to post
paulsmithy83 567
Retrieve is right up there aswell as a dog with manners. Hate dogs being called back on slip or no retrieve. Then as long they jump fences and gates its all about catch to run ratio. My dogs is used for variety of lurcher work but i do like that she doesnt hunt up and even tho saluki saturated is really bidable. So can work her off slip if need hands to carry catch. Supose it personal preference. 1 Quote Link to post
MR RABBIT 715
Basically get the bond right...right now iam in kitchen having a fag and my young dog will come threw and lie at my feet...all my young dogs do that...older ones got wise later on in years..but she wouldn't do it unless the bond was good...and that reflects what happens in the field..no dogs perfect but as long as its workable ...basically at every chase take your dog everywhere with u 1 Quote Link to post
tb25 4,627
My new pups happy to sit alone..very independent.. Strange for a young pup not wanting any fuss and a like.. Quote Link to post
mhopton 807
Watching the lamp , retrieved to hand or very close let's not forget it's just ran its hart out for the kill so to hand is not major, straight back to you after a run kill or not , jumping barb wire , to me in the dark I'd rather lift him over them rather risk him ripping him self to bits if he miss judges it . And go at your command not when it feels like it . My top two most important then is 1 watching the beam 2 working to my command Quote Link to post
dogmad riley 1,343
To catch the bloody thing at the end of the lamp, that makes a great lamping dog. Just go out and enjoy the dog don't get caught up in the numbers game or "my dog does so and so" just enjoy your dog 3 Quote Link to post
