Rowan 308
I was asked today to price a mole trapping job on a piece of land that had never been trapped , so thought I better have a look first. It was only when I got there that the lady said ,"oh by the way this is an SSSI " , so can you still trap here ? So, can anyone please give me the answer or point me in the right direction to find out , Cheers. Quote Link to post
Nicepix 5,650
Moles aren't protected and mole trapping is not going to affect any of the protected species so you can trap there IMO. Quote Link to post
Tiercel 6,986
Here is a link to a river Avon sssi and it states at #10 that it is allowed. http://www.sssi.naturalengland.org.uk/Special/sssi/old/OLD2000183.pdf TC Quote Link to post
shropshire mole 190
Have a chat with Natural England, cant see a problem, but they might put restrictions of when the trapping can be done. Quote Link to post
Rowan 308
Many thanks for all your replies, sounds like it will be o.k. then , but i'll contact Natural England just to be on the safe side. really do not want some busy body sticking their nose in until I am sure it's o.k. Hope it works out as it's a big job, plus on a nearby piece of land , not part of the SSSI they have a major rabbit problem and also want me to control the bunnies with Phostoxin. The reason being a couple of people have tried shooting , but have not dented the numbers at all. cragman 2,812
The rabbits will need long netting, shooting and ferreted. Sit out with a rimmy early doors and later on then get the night vision on. The numbers will soon diminish. Be a shame to gas them. Quote Link to post
moxy 617
I would be asking why the land holds a SSSI status. Only when you know that you can decide if your actions are going to have an impact. Quote Link to post
bryn27 89
% of my work is on SSSI covered land. Quote Link to post

I would usually do all of the above , gassing is my last choice , but as two other ,"pest controllers" , have tried and had no noticeably impact on the numbers. I've been contacted for gassing only;the same people own/manage this land and the SSSI . Quote Link to post

stealthy1 3,964
I do rabbits and rats on a chalk stream that has an SSSI bog which holds all sorts of rare'ish plants, not had any problems, from the SSSI people. 1 Quote Link to post
