pablo esc 1,598
I remember when i and others started getting out hunting and the men aroundus wwere legends and we saw and seen what the dug, some for days when the lost a dog, fires going at night, and sandy digs, at least they would come to help near and far. One good terrier man and hunter, a tough man gotbarred ffrom one of the local pubs., so he let a live fox go in there one night 1 Quote Link to post
neil cooney 10,416
Most hunting in those days was within a half an hour or so of home and the pub was usually your local. An hour in the pub never did any dog any harm and besides, lads nowadays think nothing of travelling 3 hours for a dig so what would you suggest ? Get a Ferrari ? A friendly few pints was a great way to celebrate the end of a days hunting (still is) and if you were lucky the farmer who's land you'd been on would be in there and get some pints in if you'd done him a favour, and if you'd blanked you told him you'd done him a favour anyways. There was one pub we used to have pint or three in (Fatman and Dillydog got drunk in it more than once with me) that was full of characters. Bennett's of Ardcath, and I remember one Sunday at dinner time one of the lads had shot a Fallow buck in Galway that morning, was in Bennetts for dinner time and brought the buck into the pub to show everyone. Down in the back of the pub their was a family from Dublin who wanted to leave but refused to walk out by the dead deer. Someone let them out the back door and they had to walk out through the farmyard to their car. Trouble was there was six inches of cowshit in the yard. But through it they went. The buck was b-b-q'd on the Tuesday evening and everyone in the pub had some venison. Some didn't even know what they were eating but ,hey, it was free. Venison was cooked regularly in there. There used to be a great open log fire in it too and one night a lad walked in, took some cartridges out of his pocket and threw them in the fire. The pub emptied in a second but they were blanks and the lad who threw them in nearly pissed himself with the laughter. But my favourite one is when a journalist from a top international paper was going around Ireland interviewing folk about our new woman president Mary Robinson. The owner of Bennets did an interview but it just happened to be while the local Staghound pack were meeting at the pub. The interview was printed all around the world and started off "While attending a staghunt in the tiny hamlet of Ardcath, local publican -" and so forth. That Saturday night we were drinking pints and noticed that the pub owner was on his knees crawling around looking for something. Someone asked him on the Sunday morning why he'd been crawling around the night before ? Turns out, he'd gotten a phonecall off someone representing A.L.F. (the Animal Liberation Front) and they said for supporting staghunting a bomb had been left in the pub. Rather than empty the pub on a Saturday night he decided to look for the bomb himself. That was the same pub we used to bring the strondogs into after a days hunting and there wouldn't be word about it. 13 Quote Link to post

neil cooney 10,416
I'm only a youngish lad, but for me there's only one place for a worked terrier to be an that's,seen to an put in a warm kennel to rest after a day's digging. The digs get deeper and the dogs get better by every pint, it makes me cringe haha. Sorry for pissing on your fire boys, but I'd rather get abit of fanny in a boozer than sit round looking at a sore, balled up, stinking dog. Good luck for the season Just to add. It does me good to see a young lad say that as the terrier should always come first. You're right. The day's we're reminiscing about were days when everyone knew what a working terrier was and they often sat beside the fire in a pub after a day out. Also here in Ireland it was usually baying types, hence the presence of the strongdog and it was only ever a pint or two, not a night of it. I never seen any dog suffer for the day being stretched by an hour or two. Besides, what do you do on a long days digging ? Do you bring the first terrier you've dug to home before entering the second ? Terriers are, or at least should be, a hardy animal and we never ever put drink before their welfare. 4 Quote Link to post

Zilverhaze 1,627
Lol Just the beer and dogs scenario marshman I don't agree with it atall I agree fully with everything lew said Not my scene that sat In a pub or in a beer tent at a show talking shite about dogs .. and deffinatley not after they been dug to imo it's a little disrespectful to them to leave them in the car sore or even have them tied to the table in a pub having been worked all day while I get pissed of the drink maybe it was different in those days but for me you whuldent catch me drinking or relaxing untill the dogs are cleaned fed waterd and put to bed then maybe just maybe I push the boat out and have a shandy 2 Quote Link to post
Keepbordersworking 103
One of the best things for terriers after a day working fox is heat so the terriers laid round the log fire have had the best start on the road to recovery after the pub it's check wounds clean them up heat lamp on and then double check in the morning anyone doubting that the little warriors aren't looked after should know the true terrierman look upon his terriers as true friends. Most of the men around my way liked a sounder bayer call them what you like as it was pre locator days and a overly hard dog was useless( that's why the billy dog I mentioned was sold 3 times before he found he's home) . The coursing dogs they bought in where watered after a couple of runs so I can't see as that's hurting them in any way either . The time I mentioned about my father going he had just spent Christmas Eve Christmas Day and Boxing Day away from he's children to rescue a stuck dog, I can garrantee billy was washed and feed and watered and put away before they went to pub , hardly the act of a selfish man that doesn't care about he's animals . But hey ho I just hope one day you don't share your memory's for some young buck to roll he's eyes and say you did it wrong lol . Lol Now I feel like uncle Albert for sharing a few memory's of old men that are nearly gone so I'll shut up now im out lads ? . 3 Quote Link to post
Zilverhaze 1,627
Not gona ruin the thread with my opinions on a terriers aftercare as my opinion only matters to my terriers but I don't agree with ya keepbordersworkin the best thing for a worked terrier is to get it cleaned up asap before the swelling and soreness starts not sitting around in pubs talking bubbles then cleaning him out when he's sore and wants to rest anyways back to the thread 2 Quote Link to post

Francie 6,368
Nothing better than an open fire blazing, an the wee warrior lying beside it, if its sore, I realised that the heat does wonders for the wee dogs battle wounds. Anyone else notice this? 1 Quote Link to post
j1985 1,984
Knowing terriers Id say most would rather be in a pub full of people after a dig than alone in their kennel, sore or not. Bet their tail would still be wagging 1 Quote Link to post
