pablo esc 1,598
I could go on about alot of legends, some i owned and others mates dogs, but while you talk russell, i remember another good man, Ste.M. He bred russells, spaniel crosses, etc. Lad's whent on about them, i thought yeh, they are getting carried away with themselves. Then I was gifted 3, Tina, Max, father, daughter to a shoe box russell, shit hot!! The other was a pet before and bit contrary. They were out of Paddy, these made a show out of all the breeds about, but it weren't about that. Also Max was to ground for 37 hour or more, one track mind, and scent, tube. 2 Quote Link to post
pablo esc 1,598
Legends will be remembered in a mans heart, some done to much that it hard for a man to take in, replacement is another story, one i got sick of hearing, so fortunate to fill a big gap, I'd love to lye and say the isn't. Except about 10 year ago ,for a couple of years. Thank f,, ck for good dogmen Is, id love to say) , The only thing that I'd change now, is the are holes, the human would have been mixed with, and not the dog 1 Quote Link to post

Pablo, i hope you don't mind but i edited this post to get it right. As far as i'm concerned Ste is the best hunter and dog man this city has ever produced and his dogs have been sommat special. A book should be written before it's too late! Quote Link to post

lakieman 25
ive just sat and thought for a while. and although ive owned a few that would get the job done one way or another ive never owned a dog that could have reached legendary status in anyones hands. ive been out with a few folk who had better dogs than me again not a legend between them. I must lead a sheltered life. as they all bare none had faults or flaws in there makeup. some to hard some to soft. some boringly consistent. the best of the bunch started killing regularly and we soon lost interest in digging down to a dead fox. as has already been said a legend ...says whoWhat more has a terrier got to do than be boringly consistent though mate. There is no more higher acolaide for a terrier than to stay week in week out .I dont read much more into it than that ,as that there is the ultimate ,for me anyway . lakieman 25
Give me boringly consistent every day of the week 2 Quote Link to post
marshman 7,757
For me personally for a dog to reach great status, dog or bitch not only has to be a consistent worker a dog that you can count on and years of good graft but also a " reproducer " ! A dog that can throw more workers in a litter than non workers and with a few different bitches aswell . The sort of terrier that could be the start of a dynasty a line call it what you will , dogs like this are if you're lucky a once in a lifetime jmho . Quote Link to post
pablo esc 1,598
Maybe unless you breed it over shit, then the dog would be a fluke, a one off, and only one in a litter. As an older man who has done it all his life said to me,, the has to be breeding in em, Quote Link to post
marshman 7,757
Just talking to me old father and we've only seen one lol , it was a border dog called billy my father can even remember he's KC name it was Dandyhow Brusselsprout lol such a silly name for a truelly hard dog . Anyway so the story goes a very good local digging man used to buy border dogs of an old lady that used to show them . She sold him Billy because he had one ear bigger than the other . He took the dog home and put it in a run with another dog and bitch when he got up in the morning the other dog and bitch where both dead and billy was sitting on top of the kennel , he was only 12 months old then. That done the bloke as he didn't like fighters so he sold it to another man . He had him until he was two only trouble was this man used to supplement he's wage by selling fox pelts and billy used to smash them so he sold him to another man . He wasn't really a digging man but used to bush him with he's lurchers anyway after him having to dig him out of another fox earth he got the hump and sold him to my fathers mates and this is where he earned he's reputation. Billy learned to be sensible with plenty of graft but could go through the gears when needed. I can mind my father coming home late one Christmas Eve and my mother having a right go at him because he'd been out digging with he's mates . He said I can't help it a dog is stuck to ground my brothers and me said who is it dad he replied Billy's stuck under a concrete slab that's got metal bars running through it . Christmas morning no dad he was up early and home late then Boxing Day morning dad was gone . Eventually he come home that night stinking of drink as they'd got billy out that afternoon and they'd thought they'd better celebrate with a few jars , mum is still narked with him to this day thirty odd years later lol. Anyway billy was bred to all my fathers digging mates bitches , Rosie a jrt x bull ,my fathers bow legged jack bitch Sue and another of he's mates bitch they used to say it was a lakie but in truth it was a brown mongrel terrier . All the pups worked to some degree . One pup was sold to a pet home and the woman gave it back because it killed her cat and that one turned out to be a decent digging terrier. They all where scatter bred pups no line breeding they weren't even the same breed and he through more workers than not . Eventually men got to know billy through plenty of worker and bitches where bought to him and again he still threw plenty of grafters. Billy is still talked about to this day by the older men that dug In my county . Sorry for the long yarn lads just thought billy was worth a mention , that and I'm bored lol . 16 Quote Link to post

marshman 7,757
Yes I do believe he was , one time he accidentally got over a neighbours lapdog a little yorkie cross jack bitch she favoured a strong yorkie. The little bitch had one pup a died the neighbours kept the pup a dog it was, they called him barney . Ugly fooker brown prick ears and no bigger than a bottle of tomato sauce at the shoulders . Anyway all the lads are playing football when the neighbours lad bring out barney . So we're having a kick about and he gets on under an allotment shed . All the lads got him out by the time we got to him he had no teeth and blowing red bubbles through he nose . It never happened again as the lads mum wouldn't let him take it out after that , but that dog was out of billy to a poxy lap dog and he even went albeit only the once but he still went !! Good times though ? 5 Quote Link to post
neil cooney 10,416
Nice yarn there Marshman. The bit of your dad coming home on Christmas day stinking of drink after a hard dig made me chuckle and remember that that was the way it was. I remember digging to a friends lost bitch on Boxing day in my good clobber. My mate was standing outside the pub waiting on me and nabbed me as I got out of the taxi. Regarding Dandyhow borders ? That's not the first one I've heard to be hard and bad with other dogs and the Dandyhow blood has enhanced many's a line including some black ones. 1 Quote Link to post

Different days then different dogs different men , I only knew because I was born on the fag end of them times. My father old now almost blind and in a wheelchair but can still tell you the breeding of dogs and as sharp as you like . He was a bit of a legend to me ! 14 Quote Link to post
