neil cooney 10,416
I reckon that some dogs in some lads heads and minds are legends to them, everyone has 1 special terrier that sticks in there mind for life, like that old dog in my avatar,he done it all week in week out without fuss and into old age. Many men seen him dug to and could not fault the dog and he was not fussy about what game the earth held he went about his buisness same on all quarry. He would hunt cover like a hound and would also retrieve shot game land or water. When the black dogs came around my end of the country that dog was in his prime and put many of them to shame and some that went on to make big names for themselves, how they did is beyond me.We went to a big place 1 day with a well known terrier man and he had aquired a fell dog which he claimed was a world beater. He entered his dog and after about 10min the dog showed with no interest and its owner said there was nothing home and that his dog would not leave an occupied earth. My dog was doing cart wheels to get in so the same mans brother told me to give him a run through the earth just to keep him quiet so i agreed as i knew by the old dog there was game at home.Spot entered and within 5 min was working away at about 3ft 6-7 yds from where he had entered,we left him another 10min and then dug to him with 3 pushed up tight. The man that owned the fell dog was giving every excuse in the book but in the end he was proved wrong.I have been lucky enough to have had some very good dogs through the years and unlucky that some were stolen on me but i will never have another like that old SPOT dog,let him out of his shed as usual to roam around the garden and it was a lovely sunny morn,he lay down in the sun streched out and when i went back out some time later he was still in the same place but he was dead,he was 17 and had worked hard all his life. Fatman, I started digging with you shortly after Spots passing and you said then that you might never have as good again. Knowing just about every terrier you've had since ,up 'till the present day and the ones you have now it's nice to see you speak fondly of him. What's more, knowing the standard you've kept since then Spot must have been some worker or he'd have been long forgotten because you've had more than a few good ones since then. It's funny but we Irish have had the coloured terriers now for 30+ years but most of us still have a soft spot for a good white one. Especially the Cork lads, a racist bunch, they reckon, if it ain't white then it ain't right. 11 Quote Link to post

It's JMHO but because of the way the "up close and personal" coloured terriers worked compared to the white terriers it often took a terrier man to be better at his trade to get results. If that makes sense. 3 Quote Link to post

Rabbit Hunter 6,613
'Boringly consistent' is what we strive for isn't it? I've had and dug to what I would call decent dogs in the 10 years I've been digging, but am yet to dig to or own a dog that I would call a legend, a dog that never misses a beat that is consistent week in week out. The day I own a dog that's 'boringly consistent' I'll be a happy man. 5 Quote Link to post
pablo esc 1,598
Legends will be remembered in a mans heart, some done to much that it hard for a man to take in, replacement is another story, one i got sick of hearing, so fortunate to fill a big gap, I'd love to lye and say the isn't. Except about 10 year ago ,for a couple of years. Thank f,, ck for good dogmen Quote Link to post
