Bitch In Season

Recommended Posts

[BANNED TEXT] lads could do with abit of advice I've always kept dogs. Me year old bitch has just broke down. I've been told it will knock her flat for weeks. What should I be doing with her and when should I leave her off until. Any advice appreciated

It won't knock her flat, but there will be some changes. While she is in season you know to keep her away from male dogs of course, and she may either act more skittish, or even a bit miserable as if it is her first season she won't understand the way her hormones make her feel. It is after the season that the major physical changes happen, but not for a few weeks. Her mammary glands may swell up a bit, and from about the fifth week after her season has finished she may appear fatter and softer in her muscles. This can last up to 3 months after the season has finished, and corresponds with the period during which she would be pregnant, then giving birth and feeding pups. This is the time when you shouldn't run/work her hard because her body lays down extra fat, her muscles and ligaments soften in preparation for giving birth. Some bitches go through a 'nesting' stage at the time they would have given birth. Just be patient with her if she does this. Don't pander to her, but treat her normally and keep getting her out every day to take her mind off it. Daily regular exercise is fine as is light work. You may find she appears extra greedy to the extent that she may try and eat what she catches: some of mine who are good retrievers normally do their best to gobble up any rabbits they catch! Don't worry, it won't last. Once her muscles appear to be more defined again you can start to work her harder. Not all bitches go obviously soft but they all lay down some internal fat. Some develop 'udders' between their hind legs (these would be the most productive teats were the bitch feeding pups). Some actually produce milk. This is all perfectly normal and nothing to worry about, but can be a right pain if it happens in the middle of the winter when you are trying to give the bitch a lot of work.

Think the above posts have got it covered. My old bitch was a nightmare. Every possible bad side effect of having a bitch in season, she had. And she was 6 monthly.

My bitch now is a dream. Don't know she's had one hardly. Small amount of swelling for about 3 days. Hardly any blood. No change in behaviour.

I was thinking that, that she a young bitch ? , norm as a bitch matures her season get more stressful physical. I had bitch lurcher + lurcher bred she was ok for 3-4 seasons , then as she got older her season knocked her about more. it was one of the reasons I went or males in the end , and try to keep males now, but that bitch was very good dog she done good on all quarry, she was 25in 50 odd lb brindle looked just like a greyhound , but had some collie+whippet and what ever in her lol, lived till 14 .

Maybe mate. Time will tell. Been told by a few good blokes that it's common for a fit bitch with low body fat not to have much of a season, if at all. Same as some female athletes don't have their "time of the month" or certainly not regularly.
