BGD 6,436
Big thick slices fried in bacon fat and garlic on some nice crusty bread Or you could go the stuffed and baked route, hollow out the centre and fry up some of the flesh with onions, bacon and garlic mix with some breadcrumbs and fresh herbs, stuff back into mushroom and wrap the whole thing in foil before putting in the oven on medium heat, take the foil off for the last 10 minutes or so of cooking
neil cooney 10,416
Sounds delicious. Every time I find a nice clean puff ball my hands are always full but one of these days I'll get one for the pan. Anyone else noticed mushrooms have been early this year ? I seen field mushrooms two months ago.

Definitely my favourite thing to do with giant puff balls when I'm lucky enough to come across them. Can stuff them with pretty much anything just try to avoid too much moisture or you'll end up with a big sloppy mess
mushroom 13,089
Cut like a flower, pack with garlic and herbs, pull back together with bacon, wrap in foil, slow in the oven for a couple of hours on 180°
moxy 617
Had them for tea last night. Cracking It wasn't a sloppy mess but did put out some liquid. I haven't a clue where it came from. I wouldnt have thought there would be any. With mushrooms typically being like sponges. Grand non the less
Yokel Matt 918
Unfortunately I've found a little goes a long way with these things - the same with stuffed marrow... It almost be a relief when the courgette plants come up!

BGD 6,436
Not a fan of courgettes Have you tried the yellow ones? They're grand raw in a salad sliced paper thin on the mandolin, really sweet
monkey 449
Seen a load of these the other day on a field not far from me, went there yesterday and the kids have found them and used them as footballs
jok 3,266
Well. Found three today and as luck would have it, my mate dropped me off 2 greylags and a canada. Some onions from the garden few spuds and I reckon pies are in order. We will see.
Bryony 4
Giant puffballs can be kept if you freeze them in slices. They are best then fried or dropped into stews straight from the freezer. They might fall apart a bit but its better than wasting a a whole puff-ball you can't eat in one go. Also the taste of frozen mushrooms often becomes stronger so a little goes a long way.
