lurchers 2,921
We only get £1 each hence why we eat everything I kill now for the trouble you have getting it.the wife makes game pies which we freeze and soups, broth and what ever we can make. I was getting £1 a rabbit 30 YRS ago.. if every body that sells their rabbits all put the price up at onceyou could get at least £2.50 a rabbit, they are worth that all day long to any restaurant, would you agree.. We have been getting this for over 30yrs mate if I asked 1.50 were I live they would have a fecking heart attack.but I know what ya mean but for the aggravation I would rather fill my own freezer as I've worked hard for it.but like you say they should be £2.50 the butchers charge £6+ And have no problem at that price. What you need to do is find customers buying for their own use. People who've watched Hugh Fearnley on telly and want to eat healthy tasty meat. I sell mine for 4 euro each skinned and cleaned or 15 euro for 4. 1 Quote Link to post

I've got a butcher not too far who will pay £2 a rabbit and a mate of my mums will give me £10 for a bag of 6-8 rabbit loins. But it's rare that I can be bothered to skin, gut and clean them when I get back. I usually do 2 for the pot for myself and the rest just get frozen for the ferrets. 1 Quote Link to post
lurchers 2,921
25yrs ago we had a woman who bred cats and dachshunds and she said she would buy as many as we could get.she was buying 60- 3 times a week to feed her animals on and all I had to do was gut them she said she didn't mind skinning them.but she told me this after I had cleaned the 1st batch for her hence why I just ended up gutting them. 1 Quote Link to post

terryd 8,775
am out al night till I catch what im after ,not bothered about the weather coz if I don't go im going to be hungry tomorrow ,if I don't get what im after I will be beating the wood out early morning ,the butcher is being greedy this year and will only pay 1.50 per rabbit skinned and cleaned , he puts them on the shelf for 8.00 ,im only getting £1,00 for rabbits what the dogs have caught as there a little brused ,trying to make ends meet is getting hard ,if you goe in the car you've got fuel to pay and by the end of the night your lucky to have a few quid left ,I love hunting with dogs but as the government make the rich get richer and the poor get poorer im forced into a corner and find myself stuck in that hole nobody would wish to be in ,I see loads of lads enjoying there sport but to me its becoming a task just to live ,hope I do well the night lads atb bobza Do you have a longnet bobza ? I assume maybe not because that would give you some nice clean rabbits so you could bump the price a bit if you have any venues suitable. Just a thought and good luck anyway 1 Quote Link to post

But it's rare that I can be bothered to skin, gut and clean them when I get back. I usually do 2 for the pot for myself and the rest just get frozen for the ferrets. I just get a couple of dogbowls on a small table(one for heads and one for livers, kidneys, hearts and lungs for ferrets), a bucket on the floor for guts and skins, and a couple of big polythene containers(one with cold water to wash them and one with cold salted water to soak them). Next I pour a glass of whiskey, have a good sip and clap on the headphones with an audio book and off I go!!!! After they've soaked a few hours and I've slept a few I joint them and put them in dated freezer bags and into the freezer. If any are badly bruised I write rabb instead of rabbit on the bag and they're for dogs or ferrets in a different bit of the freezer. Like any job, if you just get stuck in it's less tedious but I don't go for really huge bags anyway. 5 Quote Link to post

It's been windy as hell all day, but tonight its all vanished. Still, it's nice to get out for a few runs, whatever the conditions. I honestly think If i waited for a windy, moon-free night then I'd get out once or twice a year!! Make the most of the season chaps...... 2 Quote Link to post
dodger 3,128
That's a crackin pic but just to comment on what others are saying about weather n the moon n nights to go for a shine as you here a lot of lads saying lately about if you waited for the right nights you'd never get out n all that, I can sympathise with them but for me is wasnt just about not going because the moons up enabling you to struggle to drop on as much stuff as a good black night but the thing that keeps me in on those nights most is making sure I don't go n make the gear wise because that's what happens, so I just go daytime in those conditions until better lamping weather I thought you'd do similar especially if there isn't much about were your going.. Not many have the privilege of being able to hunt whenever they want though dodge. Day or night. Other commitments such as work and family can get in the way. I get out when I can, sometimes daytime when it's sunny or pissing down, sometimes night time when it's full moon. Other times I'm lucky and drop on them perfect nights.
