forest of dean redneck 11,836
Reading the Wheaten thread in bushing section ,got me pondering does the dog aggression come through in the lurchers, also do they show guarding behaviour? As I thought that was one of the terriers duty round the croft/farm. Quote Link to post
blackmaggie 3,377
on a limited view yes they can be dog aggressive and can only be run s.h but they are up with bull xs make no mistake about that and with a better coat and they mask working injurys better but i still prefer the bull x Quote Link to post
BGD 6,437
Haven't got a load of experience with Wheaton lurchers but I imagine like in most x's the Grey mellows them out a lot. I have known a couple pretty fiery first x's though... Quote Link to post
Gaz_1989 9,539
My 7 month old pup is showing signs of guarding instinct. She's only 1/4 or 1/8 wheaten (don't really know). She is wary of strangers. Not nervous, just aloof. And will bark if someone comes to the front gate or front door. I can't comment on dog aggression. She is very well socialised and hopefully it will stay that way. Quote Link to post
Lenmcharristar 10,001
Great dogs, seen them work at nearly everything and trained to an extent on the gun, my fav cross 1 Quote Link to post
johnrussell84 2,832
I've got a Wheaton bitch here very biddable heavy sett and aggressive at her game but unless a dog starts on her she's fine 1 Quote Link to post
chrisbullx 2,541
I've yet to have a dog aggressive wheatenx or bullx in my kennel as long as you socialise um from pups & show um who's boss you shouldn't have a problem a dog or bitch that fights ain't worth the hassle no matter what x atb cbx 3 Quote Link to post
Bosun11 537
All the ones i've been out with have been fine, some being quite meek in their general nature, if you get my meaning and have worked well alongside other dogs. That said, a 'real' Wheaten can be a real handful and they are a powerful dog but bring them on right and they should be no different to any other dog. Quote Link to post
BlackBuck 655
We had a half cross years ago , was the most laid back dog I've seen . Worked alongside terriers, hounds and other lurchers with no hassle at all . But boy could he work , one of the best single handed fox dogs I've saw . Quote Link to post
chrisbullx 2,541
what I find with pure wheatens, pitbull, staffys etc people who never had them end up having them & ear they dog aggressive from other people or what they read on net etc & assume you got to keep um away from other dogs as pups so they tend to do so that's when you end up with dog aggression & a liability of a dog imo atb cbx 3 Quote Link to post
forest of dean redneck 11,836
Sure I can understand socialising is key factor,I was just wondering with the wheaten ,does some of the terrier traits come through on the Lurcher side,I had a gsd lurcher first x years ago,but imo she was a useless guard dog, where as others on here have them and they are very good. The thing is with bull & wheaten lurchers is that before they given the chance to tune in to other dogs, you've turned em on to hunting, which if all goes well, should see em right for the rest of their lives.
