New Ferret Hutch...

Recommended Posts

Some of you might rembember the concrete block ferret enclosure I had in my garage. Some liked it, some didn't. Lol. It was about 6 foot by 4 foot.

I took it down when I had a run of bad luck, lost 2 ferrets (both died at the same time!) and lost my best Jill shortly after.

So I just had the one ferret for a while and had a 2 tier hutch.

Anyway, I bred a litter this year from a decent little Jill and kept a Hob and a Jill back so I've just knocked up another enclosure in a corner of the garage with my daughter. Thought it would keep her good for an hour and give the ferrets a bit more space.

It's 8 foot by 8 foot so plenty of space to burn off excess energy. I plan to add in some 6" flexi pipes and hammocks etc, as well as get them a big 12" water bowl...

Cheers fellas.   Stealthy - I only put it on the string to stop them dragging it around, but they seem to get more enjoyment out of using it as a punchbag. Lol. Must be good exercise too.   North

Northernlad - Yes I lost them both mate. I remember advertising the last few kits on here and someone told me to keep hold of them for a few months just incase. I ignored the advice and gifted them away, then lost the Hob and Jill I bred. Don't know what caused it. The other Jill in with them was fine.

Littleun is a real character, all she ever thinks about is dogs, ferrets, hunting, catapults. You name it. All her school work is based around hunting and the only thing she ever draws is a dog chasing a rabbit. Lol.

She has been saying for about 18 months now that she is going to be a vet just for working dogs and ferrets. Haha.

I understand that she might not have the same enthusiasm in 10 years when she finds boys and Facebook and music and partying. But for now, we have some fun...

Looking good gaz can they not clime over that don't look very high ? Good idea that rabbit hanging up atb mate

When I did it before using breeze blocks it was about 4" lower than now and it kept in 3 out of 4 ferrets for about a year. Only one figured out a way over. She would jump off the "sleeping box" and cling to the breeze blocks about 6" from the top and then pull herself up.

This time it's a lot bigger, so further to jump from the sleeping box and also the wood is fairly smooth so hopefully they won't be able to grip it.

It's just over 2 foot.

I suppose I will find out over the coming weeks if I've got a Houdini amongst the group. Lol.

The garage is completely safe though, should they escape, they would be fine til morning.

could you put a slight overhang (length of skirting board or similar) on top of the wooden panels? should stop the buggers hauling themselves up if they get a bit adventurous

Yeh that's definitely an idea mate. Will keep it in mind. Cheers ?
