Arry 22,672
About a month ago or a mate rang up ask if I new of any working ferrets going any where. I was surprised as he always had half a dozen or so. Turns out at the end of last season after a trip out his ferret became infested with fleas to the point where he burnt his hutches and took his ferrets to the vet, the vet prescribed some treatment. He told me all but two died and they were in a bad way with bulging blood shot eyes and lesions around the groin. He went back to the vet he told him it was nothing to do with the treatment. So what do you guys think? Cheers Arry 2 Quote Link to post
Jax13 251
sounds odd. if you can get a name for the treatment i can ask the missus to look into it & maybe phone the royal college and ask for advice on it. i just use frontline spray, a couple of pumps every couple of months and mine are spotless despite the hutches being a yard from the field hedge and me feeding just-shot rabbit through the year where the fleas may not even have abandoned ship between shooting and chucking it in for them if the bunnies have been bedroom window shots into the field beside the hutch! jocky 198
had the same problem mate. my ferret pen/run as allways been clean. looked at them about two weeks ago and covered in fees. 4 of them are ok now after spray and powder in new bedding. all was disinfected out. but one of my best jills as got a hear infection. been cleaning it with mild salt water and cotton buds round out side. and been putting ear drops in. she is better than she was, but still walks like she is been on the pop.., she can not walk straight. think she as had a flee go down in her ear . BGD 6,436
Ok this has got me worried. I've just bought some small cat Advantage for my stinkers, that isn't what your mate used is it? Think I'll hold off on putting it on them... Quote Link to post
Arry 22,672
Sorry BGD I don't know what it was, just that it was prescribed by the vet. Thing is he thinks it was the treatment but the vets say no. I use spot on for ferrets and small animals or front line for cats and kittens but just put a couple of drops on each and keep them apart till it dries. This happened at the end of last season, I only found out because he was look for some working ferrets for this season. Managed to find him some a lady who used to work a harris hawk with ferrets was giving up. Its odd because he has had ferrets all his life and likes breeding them every year, would have thought he know what he's doing. I was hoping some body may have heard of this before and know what to stay away from, or is it a disease. Cheers Arry Quote Link to post
lurchers 2,890
If you use dog spot on on a cat it will kill it,so just be careful when you buy it that you pick the cat one for the ferrets not the dog one Quote Link to post

Raymond 618
Only ever had bother with kits I bought in , they where lopping had to shampoo the lot of them and treat the hutches them start again front lining them You hit the nail on the head with shampoo, you can use washing up liquid aswell. If you want you can add a couple of dropps of teatree oil. If you dont want to use strong chemicals to treat fleas especially on young pups and you ferrets. Human shampoo or washing up liquid will do as I said. What you do is wet up the fur and put some shampoo on the fur. Keep rubbing it in untill you get a nice layer of sudds all over the ferret or pups coat. Leave the sudds in for 3 to 4 minutes before rinseing out. If you can do this 1 to 3 times a day for 4 days . You will deffo see no fleas after a couple of day, but I do it for 4 days. The sudds take the coating of the flea and it dehydrates. If you put a couple of drops of teatree oil in the shampoo it will act as a deterant aswell. Dont use too much teatree oil as it is very strong. Ive done this several times and it works Quote Link to post

Cheers Arry Spoke to a vet pal of mine and he assured me an approriate dose of Small Cat Advantage will be perfectly safe for the stinkers He said the reaction your mate reported sounds far too extreme to be from any flea treatment he has experience with Quote Link to post
Arry 22,672
I wondering if the vets gave them a jab of some thing as there seems to be some thing called "Vaccine Reaction" http://www.exoticpetvet.net/smanimal/vaccine.html Its a bit long but worth a read about two thirds the way through. Guest vin
I've just done a couple of days ferreting with the hobs and all 3 are absolutely ringing with ticks.. It was a paid pest job next door to a Deer park and the amount of stuff crawling off the bunnies was rough. It would take me a week to pick every single one off the poor fellas,So I've sprayed them with some Beaphar Cat/Kitten flea spray and I've given them a spot-on of Ivermectin pigeon/bird drops according to their weights, plus a bit for good measure. I can see they're dying and dropping off already so I'm sure in a few days they will be ok. I cant afford to be going to vets for advocate spot-ons for 9 ferrets. . . ( not all mine.. I've got Tomo's team while he's away ) Quote Link to post
