MoChara 1,632
As a follow up from my last broody duck the black/white magpie who hatched out 3 ducklings. The other broody, pure white broody magpie I found in a hedge is at present a new mama duck to one duckling so far. It's been around 48 hrs from the lone duckling has hatched, and I'm praying some more hatch. You never know! But where she is is not a great location, it was great until the little fluff ball hatched and now it's like a dumping site, flies the lot everywhere! So today I needed to make sure she's sitting on viable eggs to decide if I should leave her in there a while longer or move her and the Lone Ranger into a clean dry area. So with this in mind - I bit the bullet and nicked an egg from the nest today, run like a ostrich up to the candler and candled it. It was full which tells me there is a full term duckling in there rather it's alive or dead I'm still unsure, no pip in airsac. When holding as still as possible I seen the little flutter near the airsac but undecided if it was my hand shaking or a little living duck hopefully about to pip soon. Ran back like mo farrah and placed the egg back under mama duck. All done within a minute or two... Phew! As close to nature as you get with this hatch

Cute wee buggers, lovely shape to them They are brilliant little things, when I was breeding them I must of gave 120eggs away all fertile just to eat and I gave about 20young away.they are like chickens when you are digging the garden for the worms you nearly take there heads off with the spade.i will get some picks for you as the 2 I got her are ducks as I didn't want to breed any more I just like the eggs but I will get some pics of the ones I gave my mate. MoChara 1,632
She finished the nest yesterday. So got one baby. ONE Ah but that's how it goes, broody done great in hedge during days of bad weather the lot. Checked remaining eggs, 4 rotten (explosion type) and two fully formed but un pipped ducklings remain in shell. Happy enough knowing she's a good broody for the future along with her black/white sibling who hatched the 3 out last month. Good job ladies
