ryaldinhio 4,612
Started construction on the new hutch today. I drew plans up and had a chippy at work do the cutting for me and it went togrther like a jigsaw so if anyone wants the measures I can send across. It is split as I am planning on having my jills in one part and the hobs in the other.....might be an issue when they are in season? The new hutch is going to back onto a new ferret court which will replace the green house 10'x8'. Hoping to get it all done in the next month or so before the weather turns. https://db.tt/QitLF4QP https://db.tt/fYSjo9uL https://db.tt/I6aNY242 https://db.tt/5Yy6S8Ff https://db.tt/wGReYZn9 https://db.tt/rjwXuxDi https://db.tt/7SalJ3yN 4 Quote Link to post
ryaldinhio 4,612
the lips around the sides and back wont be left like that. I had planned on cladding the outside and insulating the gap to keep it warmer in winter and cooler in summer............I may be going a bit OTT! Lucky stinkers! Quote Link to post
Leeview 791
keep the green house and put the cage(s) inside it, replace the green house door with a mesh door, floors already slabbed so perfect for the run for them Y.I.S Leeview Quote Link to post
ryaldinhio 4,612
I am keeping the greenhouse to grow mi toms in! Moving that further down the garden next to the veg plot. I was thinking of trying to do something with it and buy a new one for vegies till I realised the price of a 10 x 8 greenhouse! Im leaving the slabbed base down to build court on. Quote Link to post

ryaldinhio 4,612
https://db.tt/7hQRilHY https://db.tt/6y8cLgq2 Managed to get a bit further with the hutch today. All cutting done. now needs a sand down and stain, hinges, latches, the insulation and cladding and roof felt. I changed my plan from a split hutch to just a double tier. house and food upstairs play area downstairs. Think Im guna put my 3 jills and my hob all in together then just remove him when it gets to that time of the year for the girls. 1 Quote Link to post
BGD 6,436
Lucky stinkers indeed Just a little tip for you, I'd get a scrap of carpet tacked onto that ramp. I've had similar before and they just slid straight off it before I put the carpet down Quote Link to post

I've had similar before and they just slid straight off it before I put the carpet down I'd use 6" flex pipe instead of the ramp. I have pipes in my court varying sizes and angles it's good enrichment, plus no chance then of them falling/ jumping of sides, especially if in future you had kits in there... 1 Quote Link to post

Im planning on building a full court with pipes and stuff in, what I am doing with the ramp is putting it on a hinge with a latch on the underside of the upper level so I can lift it up and latch in place to split into 2 seperate areas to assist with cleaning the hutch. I have also cut another 2 pieces for a sleeping area wall and door downstairs to replace the small mesh one at the end (if that makes sense?) so it can easily be changed to a split pair of hutchs for if I had kits.......I have tried my best to cover everything but sure Im bound to have missed summat!!! bobcullen79 1,495
Lucky stinkers indeed Just a little tip for you, I'd get a scrap of carpet tacked onto that ramp. I've had similar before and they just slid straight off it before I put the carpet down I`d be wary using carpet or 10mm square mesh. They can get caught and rip nails out when they topple off the ramp in the struggle or play fighting. What I normally do is tack lengths of 10mm square baton the width of the ramp on or cut grooves in the ramp every 1.5 inches. The groove cut method also works on bits of smooth pipe. It also helps keep the tubes clean(er) as the shed fur, dust and dander falls through. Tidy hutch by the way. Thats what my new builds look like in my head... The end result is usually a little different. Never had a ferret break out mind. 2 Quote Link to post

I didn't think of the nails getting caught, will definitely go with the baton or groove route if I ever use ramps again 1 Quote Link to post

The hinge on the ramp sounds like a good idea! One thing would suggest is if/when Jill is a couple of weeks from dropping I would move Jill to a different hutch to give birth as noise/ smells from other Ferrets above or below her may panic the mother and could result her in killing the kits. Just a thought because I have some jills which become really timid when have kits and other aren't bothered but not worth the risk. Quote Link to post
