Rabbit Hunter 6,613
A mate of mine had a bitch pup recently with a hernia, the vets sorted it for about £150 and all was well for a couple of months until it came back worse and he had it done again and was given a bill for £1100! Ouch. Quote Link to post
smasher 1,055
Had a pup with umbilical hernia, use to pop out, vets said it wouldn't effect him no need to get it done,I got it sorted anyway, didn't like the idea of him pullin himself through a tight spot and gettin it snagged on a root or similar. For euro it gave me peace of mind 1 Quote Link to post
hjckcff 1,738
well the saga goes on. max finished his antibiotics and the lump disappeared so I was getting him out again . but yesterday it came back . so back to the vets and another week of antibiotics then back to the vets. the timing is sh1t. he is bouncing off the walls and driving me nuts lol. on the plus side he has never been in better condition and is a promising youngster so hopefully we will get over this hurdle and crack on. a recent pic 3 Quote Link to post

fireman 10,917
I've got a lurcher going through the same thing at the moment with absess's apearing on her, she's in a right state and has been for a week.£300+ in vets bills and they still can't suss it and i'm really thinking pts is the only way to go as it's getting silly with her only eating a little and the way she looks with these lumps all over her head and neck, had blood, puss and biopsy's done without any proper result and got to wait another weekend to see if these new anti biotics are better than the last lot but it don't look good and to be honest if i loose ths dog that's me done with lurchers if not dogs totaly.. hjckcff 1,738
did the vet use terms like STRANGE. PUZZLED and BIZZARRE. then hit you with another bill for something they are not sure how to deal with. Max is keeping great condition . its just frustrating that he cant get out and work as he is at the age where you can see he needs stimulation. fireman I hope you get the lurcher sorted fella. chin up its just a bad time of year for em to be off on a sicky 2 Quote Link to post
skycat 6,173
If this is an abscess and something is trying to work its way out, and it comes back despite being removed, I would leave it to burst naturally as the dog's body wants to do ... that is if it would be safe to leave it to burst and drain naturally. I've had a couple of dogs with lumps that were removed surgically, came back (one did it twice) and then I let them burst and drain, just keeping them very clean and washed out with salt water every day. The lumps never came back once they'd done it naturally. Just a thought. It might not even be a foreign body, but a some nasty bacteria that grows again if not every tiny speck has been removed. And the problem with endless courses of antibiotics is that if it is of bacterial origin, and they don't kill it first or second time around, the bacteria just grow more and more resistant. 3 Quote Link to post
hjckcff 1,738
skycat it grows like a perfect orb. till its around the size of a marble. then if left it forms a hard mass around it. this becomes very large and starts to cause him some discomfort. and then a rise in his temp its deep set and there is no sign of pain or redness around the area . its not like any absess ive come across. 1 Quote Link to post
whippet 99 2,613
exactly my point , robbing mothers ,.....change type of antibiotics should sort it , but will need long course, not ideal for young dog as immunity later on in life could develop, im no vet just what ive seen between mates and done me self I have punctured abscesses too let them oooooze out followed by antibiotics Quote Link to post
stop.end 4,079
if he is kept indoors and is shampooed or washed regularly he may be getting a reaction from the mixture in that, dogs have there own natural oils to wash their coat but sometimes when folk keep them indoors... their family members like them to smell like ferbreeze, not good for the dog its immunity or its nose.... washing dogs often can cause problems for the dogs coat its natural immunity and scenting ability especially if its a young pup and exposed to said environments regularly, hope you get it sorted..... 1 Quote Link to post
