logan esq 99
Hey gents, I've had a hw90k for about 10 years now and it's a bit dinged up on the stock. The blueing isn't the best. I want to make it looks the dogs. The stock has "varnish" or something like that finish I want to strip it and oil it up and hopefully bring out the grain. What's the best way to strip off the finish? Sand paper (by hand), electric sander? Or a chemical to take of the finish? I'm thinking electric sander but wanted to ask other people's advice first. Also I want get rid of the barrel wieght and fit a mod. Heat the end up to remove it or put it in vice and twist it off? And is there anyone in the north east that can recrown the barrel to accept the mod? Many questions I know, so if anyone can help or point me the right direction, I'd really appreciate it. Atb. King. 215
Hi logun I had a 90k. I took the stock off and my mate took it to a metal fabrication place to have the barrel cut down and threaded. To fit a logun silencer. Have a ring around the local metal tool makers someone will do it no doubt. As for the stock stripping I couldnt help you with that. Someone on here will probably give you some good info. Cheers king. Quote Link to post
smk 31
Hi Logun I have stripped back a few stocks and I still do it the old way by using a course sandpaper to remove the varnish that protects the stock and then I use a medium grade sandpaper to get to the original wood then a nice fine sandpaper to really smooth the stocks. I hope this helps you Logun Quote Link to post
logan esq 99
Cheers smk. So you reckon electric sander is a no then. I was thinking getting finer grades of paper as I get closer to the wood. Atb Quote Link to post
smk 31
Hi Logan just be careful if you use the sander as it might take more wood off than you want, if you are careful you will be ok Quote Link to post
tomburras 2,729
I dunno how your stock is finished iv done loads of shotgun stocks but iv allways used nitromose to remove the Finnish them fine sandpaper. Saves some elbow grease and removed less wood. Quote Link to post
Rez 4,957
I used a mouse thing Sander on my HW97 wood. Wiped over with some WD40. Gives a honey due colour but does get mucky when mits are around it in the field unless you varnish it. Beech wood is a bit shit really. Did the same to my PS too. Not recommend if you want it to stay prestine of course. But both are used in the field, so there gonna get a bit on the filth side. No idea even if this is helpful. Quote Link to post
