How do folk rate sissor traps ??

 

I've seen lads using barrel & talpex but these don't seem as popular..

 

I got a few of these and plan to give then a bash in the winter..

 

Any "fettling" required with these??

 

They seem straight forward enough.

I am not to sure what you mean mate.

 

So put a sausage shaped plug, below the circular trigger plate ??

 

Is that to encourage them to attempt push through trigger plate.

Leave a little loose soil in the run bottom,and sit the ring onto it, make sure the trap fits firmly in the hole, so it wont wobble as such when the mole tries to shove through,

on the ring there's two bent lugs either side of it,adjust these with pliers till you get the trap as sensitive as you can, yet so it will not fire on its own, yet go on light touch, the other thing I find is the trap legs are some times too long on the trap, sit the trap on a table top set and make sure there's minimum travel room under the trigger ring,I have had to shorten these in the past,as for a trap, Tunnel and Talpex are my main traps, I do set these and to be honest they do alright, once you are used to setting them cover them carefully,I cut the sides out of a old sheep lick tub, into short strips, a couple of inch long and maybe a inch or so wide, and place them across the the trap arms then fill with soil, car inner tube works well too,not between the jaws, as in through the handles,but across you will see when you get them in the ground,and as with any mole trap,they need to spring unhindered, good luck hope that helps,

Ive actually caught alot of moles with my scissor trap, but like darren says alot of tinkering needed to be done with the trap before i was satisfied to use it.

First i took the trigger off and re-attached it with strong cord instead of the wire that was orginally connected to traps itself. This was so that the trigger could pe set at the correct height as ifound before hand it was to high off the run floor, to avoid the chances of the mole managing to go under the trigger.

I then like darren said was to file down the the lugs to get a lighter trigger.which in my opinion is essential.

I like to use a soft plug if earth squashed onto the trigger on both sides,this is just my personal choice but think the mole is less likely to suspect fowl play and continue on as normal.also a snug fit is essential for a scissor trap, you take to much soil out the hole then that mole will go-around it.

I agree the coil springs are better, the leaf springs can work well, but too many cheaply produced poor quality one out there,
