Got Him At Last!

Recommended Posts

Last monday I went to the hunting ground to accompain a costumer (and also good friend) on a stalking after one buck in particular.

We had seen him a few times since april but never had the chance to have a nice clear shot. The buck was one to be "retired" this year; old and a true competence for better and younger ones but still a very nice one.

So off we went to the areas where we usually had seen him and when we were losing all hope my teckel started to follow a very fresh trail (good thing he is always on a leash!). I picked him up and told my costumer to do some binocular search. After a few seconds he drew a great smile on his face and said the magic words "El viejo" (The Old Guy). I could see him clearly without the binoculars, standing among the bushes.

We could get closer so we started the stalking when I saw something moving to his left. A doe was looking straight at us.

It was going to happen again, El Viejo was going to escape and this time we have had a fairly nice chance to shoot (and it had been me the one insisting on getting closer!). A quick decision had to be made so I told the costumer to try a quick shot and, although he is not used to this kind of shooting (he always prepares his shots very carefully) he aimed at the buck and after some seconds that seemed minutes to me he fired.

The buck made a sudden movement and fell after taking a few steps as the doe fleed showing us her white shield. We didn't even had the need to do any blood tracking, we could perfectly see where the animal was but I never miss a chance to make my dogs happy so I went to the exact point where he had started tracking and just let him do. After three minutes he was barking at the buck wagging his tail triunphantly and biting his neck.

El Viejo was dead, but the chase after him had been a hunt we will always remenber.

As a tribute to it,here are a couple of images of this animal who has reminded me how great true hunting is. I hope you like them.

Cheers.

Thank you.

It is always something else when you come to know a certain animal and you´ve been playing cat and mouse for some time.

This time we won, but more than once they do!

I guess that is why I like hunting; you never know what will happen!!

Cheers.
