trigger2 3,287
some dogs just behave different when they have the real thing in there mouth. just keep going out and trying your best with the pup. its just patience and practice and see if you can get the pup right. Quote Link to post
shaaark 11,339
Is it the pup you put a pic of in the deerhound thread? If it is, behave yoursel ffs, it's a 5 1/2 month old pup! 1 Quote Link to post
J Darcy 5,871
IMO do not throw that ball more than once a day at the most and the pup is far too young for rabbits. If you want the retrieve you need to have the dog mature enough to obey the recall. Good luck. 2 Quote Link to post

A tad less abrupt than my reply lol, but if it is the pup in the deerhound thread, for goodness sake, (better)? Lol, it looks a gangly, big boned sort of a pup, give it some time to mature before it's run at anything really, and rabbits are not ideally suited for a big framed type of pup of any x or breeding to pick up whilst still so young. @ Carlton, no offence Quote Link to post

I am not referring to the physical aspects of your pup, but the mental aspects. 1 Quote Link to post
hjckcff 1,738
when your PUP retreaves anything reward it with a treat. once it is mature enough to go on live quarry do the same. it will settle with plenty of work. if you put the ground work in before live game. good luck with your pup. I disagree. If you mix treats and retrieves the pup will soon stop carrying to hand and will instead just run back for its treat. They do not reason like humans. Treats should be used for recall only, once the carrying starts there should be no treats as by that time the recall should be programmed deep in the dogs brain. but thats JMHO. 7 Quote Link to post

I dont know about about that, with my bitch (she very food orientated) I used to reward her only when the object was delivered to hand, however my young terrier might have been a gun dog in a previous life he regularly brings me random objects when out and retrieves anything I throw not that he'll be retrieving much when he comes of age anyway, he cares little for food rewards so I use a rag toy as his reward, with each dog it's different mate you just got to figure out what makes it tick and then capitalized on it, I wouldn't let it touch any rabbit until its retrieving a dummy though jmo atb Micky Quote Link to post
