BlackStreak 498
If it were me I would start by correcting the excited behavior while the dog is on the lead. Whether the dog is waiting it's turn to run or is just having to watch a rabbit run because you didn't release it. Work on the dogs manners and behavior while it's on the lead and do not slip it untill the behaves itself. To do this, you will need to get the dogs attention, not just wait for it to calm down. If you start bumping rabbits and the dog waits for you to release it like a gentlmen, then let it go. If it whines then correct the dog and do not turn it loose. If it spins, correct the dog and make it sit or stand in a calm manner. If the dog just sits but is all tense and not really surrendering to you then I would wait till the dog really relaxes and surrenders before proceeding. Once your get the dog calm and corporative on the lead under these circumstances, then i would start releasing it. After a run or two, bump a rabbit and do not release the dog and watch it's behavior. If it gets excited then get the dogs attention emmediatly and make it calm down and surrender before proceeding. This is how i would address the problem. Quote Link to post

Cheers for that he also constantly pulls on the slip so I think I'll put him on a choke leader and address that problem then I'll also try calm the dog down Quote Link to post

WILF 46,681
That was the dog first time on the lamp ever he is 15 month old Fair play, then exactly as I said before......if it was his first time do t give him 7 mate, just give him 1 ......as easy a catch as you can find him then just go home. I reckon your trying too much too soon, nothing to do with fitness. Baby steps all the way, you will have the dog a good long time so your not in a rush. 1 Quote Link to post
neems 2,406
I got the dog very fit, then only took him out during the day for a while, give a few easy catches, then back on lamp a few more easy ones and the problem stopped. that was a couple of years ago,so there is hope Quote Link to post
