Northwood 6" Quick Kill Trap

Recommended Posts

O.k so asked this question in another place with no success, so thought I'd try here!

Anyone have any info on the Northwood 6" Quick Kill Trap? I know it went into and out of production in the 80's, for the American trapping market, and as you can see it looks very like The Fenn M6!

So anyone know why it went out of production so quickly, or have any more relevent information on the history of this trap?

wow i like the look of that....am i the only one who has thought about a big ass fenn for foxes

The trap would be cheap enough to make, but hiring Arnold Schwarzenegger every time you wanted to set it would be expensive. :D

I was told the northwoods quickkill was developed for N.J. as we were losing our rights to use footholds. The first models were a copy of the fenn trap. They came in a 5 inch and 6 inch size. It was determined that the 5 inch was to small to capture our muskrats, so the #6 was put into production. It was determined that the pan was to large for a dependable catch. So the pans were cut down on the prototypes. The trap also lost the flat bar on the front. I think there was only 200 dozen produced and they were never advertised. These traps are getting harder to find. I have at least 2 dozen that I still trap with. They work very good in the right spots. Our traps have to be completely submerged to be legal. When setting these for muskrat and mink, you cannot have more than a 1/2 inch of water over the pan and it must be on a hard bottom, they don't seem to work in mud or on floating vegitation as they are always sprung with no catch. I can send some pics of the other models if you are interested. Just may take a day or two. Northwoods sold out to woodstream right after this trap was developed. 1984-1985. see ya steve

So there ya go!

If anyone has anything else to add, then please share!

I'd like to thank Steve, and Ditchshitter, ( who some of you Will know) for all their help on this one!

Steve knows all about the trap and has covered most of it above

The traps were made in Taiwan and imported to Northwoods in the US. I have examples of the prototypes and production model in both sizes.

Fenn was not too happy about them copying his design but was powerless to do much about it to be honest.
