Netmaking Query. When To Add A Mesh?

Recommended Posts

i've made about 8 nets so far and no matter how i load the needle they seem to keep twisting in on me.

of the couple of things i think could be the cause, one thing i thought was if adding a mesh onto the last loop on each row was the culprit?

ive seen a few different tutorials and seen middle row and end row additions so don't know whether it is a cause of problems or not. they aren't terminal - they just roll in a little on the edge mesh or two and only twist once along the length of a 4ft net (no drawcord or pegs fitted as yet which could help straighten them a bit.

i was also going to be a bit weird and try laying them straight onto the ironing board and pressing them to try and remove their habit. got to be worth a try!

fwiw, i am stitching each row left to right with the ring fastened onto a swivel and i am also reducing my meshes on the end of each row.

The twist is more likely to be either the way your loading the needle, or a bad spool of twine, it will be one of the two. as for increasing I do it two meshes before the end of a row.

will do dave - they'll still catch - its just bleddy irritating that they won't sit flat!

when you load the needle, do you turn it forward and then back again or keep turning it in the same direction like a screw? does it even matter?

How do you add a mesh two meshes from the end? I add mine on to the end. Is that your personal prefrence or is there a reason you do it?

Some times there's nothing you can do about the twist, its the twine at fault. Ive seen this twine being made first hand when i was shown round the factory. They know some spools are a bit lively, Its a very old machine producing this twine so dont expect it to change any time soon. You can however expect a rise in price because they can take it or leave it, its not a big product for them.

I first learned from that video but i found theres no need for the double knot he does an every mesh mine slipped with the double but i got told to just do a single and it has been grand since imo.

It wasnt the knot you were using, its more likely you were missing the mesh

If I am increasing on a purse net I increase on the second mesh and third last mesh of a row. The reason for that is it gives you full meshes at the end of a row where the draw cord will run. I belive the draw cord run better through full meshes as opposed to half meshes which you get if you increase on the end and beginning of a row.

I'll give that a bash and see how i get on cheers for the advice.

based on the theory of keeping the smaller mesh out of the way of the drawcord i am now adding the extra on top of my second knot on each row (making the short loop #3) and it seems to be working out pretty well. doing the same on the way back down and taking the mesh in on the second knot too.

I am only increasing by 1 mesh on each row so haven't been adding at both ends but to be perfectly honest - the nets look no different! with any luck they will purse up a little bit quicker (although adding on the end still caught flying teddy bears perfectly fine when i tested them!)
