Should The Site Be Renamed ???

Recommended Posts

I think the problem (if there is one), is that some of the sections are a very narrow field of interest, to all but the most dedicated followers.

I dip into most of the sections, to learn more than to contribute, (I've got 4 terriers and a lurcher pup, all my dogs are BARF-fed, ive got a couple of catapults, I shoot air rifles, I fish and I shoot shotguns with friends), but I know absolutely nothing (nothing !) about longnetting, taxidermy or reloading, so I rarely go there. It isn't that they're boring, quite the opposite - but if you're 'uninitiated' they can seem a bit like dark arts, a bit bewildering.

Now, ask for someone's thoughts on politics or immigration, and EVERYONE has one, and there are lots of different ones, and conventional wisdom can be challenged and so on.

Having said that, I think the site is doing a service the way it is - some of the sections cover "niche" topics that are genuine skills, and the knowledge base must be maintained and shared, or they will die out. I don't want to see longnetting and ferreting consigned to the Museum of Skills That Died Out Because Loads of People Thought They Were Boring......

And, if you don't like a particular section or topic, there's always plenty else to read, so leave things as they are, I say !

If I can manage to juggle work commitments I am planning on spending a week on Dartmoor with just a poncho some basic kit and a few rations and cover a fifty mile course living off the land as I go ..

It seems like every day I come on here there is less and less hunting talk and an obsession to talk about God and gypsies .......

Its an issue really.   We are on a discussion site, to discuss something which is illegal, and so discussing it is forbidden or at least very foolish.   Other than the above, most folk would rathe

In all fairness Socks its people like you who should be starting more hunting related topics as you have far more experience and understanding than many of us........sometimes people make idiots of themselves by discussing topics they clearly dont have much knowledge/experience of where they would be better off just reading.....i dont comment much on hunting for that reason but it doesnt mean to say i dont read those topics with massive interest.....it just needs folk like yourself to get more of them going.

Couldn't agree more Gnash, you've got to be in it to win it, to quote a phrase!

No different than shows, don't stand there and berate the ammount of none workers in the ring when your stood outside with a couple of well grafted dogs on leads...

Rack your brains for hunting subjects, or put up a none contrversial photo (All-Terrain done it well a few months ago with his 'view from your swim' post) and most importantly post wisley, help where you can and keep doing it, the site is only what YOU make it.

Oh yer, Wilfs dead right Gnash, you should put more of your bull dog knowlage up, it would be facinating reading. ;)

The problem is I do it for a living ... I was out night shooting rabbits last night and had a decent bag ... I am just about to go and check my squirrel traps then I have a massive garden to look after that wants everything bar song birds shot so that will be a mixed bag of game ... I have two very nice ferreting jobs coming up in in some prestigious places BUT for me now it's like a carpenter putting up pictures of a door he has just hung or a brickie taking pictures of a wall he has built ... It's a job I just do it and get on ... Plus when I'm working it would be very unprofessional to be cutting around taking pictures ... When winter comes and my hunting partner is up on weekends I will be out hunting with no pressure for numbers so I will relax take some snaps and post a bit more about hunting .......

No 6 man tent, camping chairs and fancy metal fire pit this time then?

Seriously though that sounds a cracking time (sort of thing I'd love to do if I wasn't so soft ) I'll look forward to reading the thread

I've got to disagree with you there mate. Although slightly different to me taking pictures of fences I've done you could still take pictures of game you have caught. After all you are a vermin controller and it could help your business if you were to have a website or get work through social media.

As for hunting photos I'm exactly the same when it comes to having a night out with friends, it never crosses my mind to get my phone out and either take a photo or start recording.

I think I'm going to treat myself to a go pro camera this year and hopefully I can get a bit of picking up filmed this year and obviously the fog work that comes with that. You'll just have to block out the swearing....?

Suppose i just feel a bit of a fraud writing about dogs as i dont keep them anymore but i suppose anyones entitled to an opinion whether you still participate or not.

You be careful down there Socks, the place is full of wanna be Bear Grylls wandering round starving. They’ll like as not have you in the pot simmering in desperation as the feckers can't catch a rabbit for love or money lol. Last time I was down there was a fella making snares out of grass, recon he'd spent too much time smoking it, showed me one, wouldn't have held a grasshopper! He was planning on spending 4 nights sleeping out and eating what he caught/found recon the only thing he was gonna catch was Lymes disease lol.

We have a very good website mate with some very good pictures on there ... Thing is you have to be careful what pictures you put up ... Even though people are looking for pest control most don't want to see dead animals ... It's a bit nuts really ......
