stealthy1 3,964
Once saw Uriah Burton fight for ten grand and the ST Ledger when I was a kid, he was 60 then, used to advertise with fliers saying that he would fight you for 10 grand, and if you lost, you had to become religious, he could take some stick, and give it back. WILF 47,501
There's a video on the net of Big Joe fighting another big old fat man.......it's a display so shite and yet at the same time pathetically sad that it's almost hard to watch. Two very, very fat pensioners stumbling around on a road in the middle of nowhere. Now I have seen a few old boys who could hand out hidings well into their 60s and I have to say they would have leathered these so called bare knuckle legends. There comes a time in your life when you just have to behave yourself and stop being a wally !

MickC 1,825
Mclean only mentioned in his book the 1 loss to Shaw, must have slipped his mind the 4 times he was knocked out in the first round, iirc he had 13 unlicenced fights and lost 6 . The book Wildcats by Danny Woolard is a good read about the unlicenced game at the time and other things . Uriah burton was widely accepted as king of the Gypsies then followed by Bartley Gorman.Dan Rooney was also about at the time who was highly rated.BG fought to a draw with Mark Ripley, not sure how old BG was at the time but iirc MR was still a teenager . Different people have different opinions who was the best so unless they fought each other, who knows ! Wonder who is accepted as KING now . marshman 7,758
I've only just seen this thread and haven't read all the comments lol but for me the only ones that I really respect for are the travellers that have fought professionally . These ones would laugh at the " king of the gypsy " Monica ! Yer travellers like a fight but there's a world of difference between slugging it out on the cobbles and doing like a athelete in the ring . So for me just some I respect!! 1. Tyson furry ( controversial I know but has got a crack at the heavyweight title ) 2. Billy Joe Saunders 3. Henry Wharton 4. John McGuire. UFC. Fighter . Not bad I suppose for a people that are only a small fraction of the population ?
MickC 1,825
Andy Lee is also a traveller iirc .
