Lloyd90 509
Try a box of Privi partisan. If it shoots good your in luck cos its about half the price of the other brands 1 Quote Link to post
shovel leaner 7,650
Try Sako , I have found them excellent and haven't changed for years . But if you can try some privi like the previouse post said they are a lot cheaper . A friend of mine shoots them and won't buy anything else . Quote Link to post
mad4it 695
i would try privi if my gun shop sold them they only sell fedrulal, norma, winchesters and serria Quote Link to post
Alsone 789
Most gun shops will accept a delivery from another shop for a £10 fee, if not, it's worth a detour to get a box to try for what you'll save. You can always bulk buy by mail order later if your gun likes them, or if you local RFD won't accept them for a £10 fee, it's still worth the trip out of your area for a bulk buy. You never know if your gun likes them and you start bulk buying by RFD transfer, your shop owner might decide to stock them seeing the business he's missing out on. Quote Link to post
Lloyd90 509
A box of Federal 75gr ballistics for my 243 has gone from £24 - £32 and that was a long while ago when I bought them n all, god knows they they cost now. Think I can get 100 x Privi for about £60-65 so the savings are just stupid. I've kept all the brass from my privi's and got a Lee classic loader so tempted to just start reloading my own and see how that goes. 1 Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
You will find it hard to get a round the .222 does not like, my first choice would be, Federal,Hornady, best of all buy some re-loading gear and create your own super accurate ammo. 1 Quote Link to post
shropshire dan 467
I've asked my local to get some PRVI .243 to try. Anyone know a good starting point bullet weight for .243. Wanted to stay between 75g and 90g Quote Link to post

Wanted to stay between 75g and 90g Factory loads of reloads Dan ? I've finally gone today and bought the stuff I need to do my own reloads. Got the Lee classic loader kit ages ago, today I got some ramshot hunter powder and some 87gr HPBT bullet heads, both Gunshop were out of primers atm tho so have to bloody wait for the time being Quote Link to post

Wanted to stay between 75g and 90g If you are reloading Dan, Sierra grain blitz, they will do everything you want of them, from 400yard crows to a Roe at 250, very good bullet indeed. shropshire dan 467
Thanks chaps but not intending on reloeding to be honest. Rather buy factory loads. Quote Link to post
Lloyd90 509
Thanks chaps but not intending on reloeding to be honest. Rather buy factory loads. Privi do both 90 grain and 100 grain soft points. Maybe try a box of each ? Some people find 100gr heavy in a 243 and won't stabilize as good as slightly lighter bullets so the 90s may be better. It's worth trying them out for sure. Theyre the only rounds I've used atm and have taken fox (which ran on a good 30 yards before stopping) and fallow (which dropped on the spot but was still alive) both with the privi 100 grain. On the fallow the bullet went straight through both shoulders well. I imagine it did the same for the fox and didn't expand quick enough hence it ran a bit before dropping. Quote Link to post
shropshire dan 467
Fair enough mate I'll try and get my hands on a box of each and try them. Thanks Quote Link to post

TBH, your experience just backs up what I was going to say, I'd stay away from softpoints if your primary use is fox / small prey. You'll tend to get poor expansion in their narrow soft bodies and over penetration. That's the probable reason for the runner with the fox. You'd be better off buying a ballistic tipped varmint round and then keeping a single box of heavier softpoints for dedicated deer use. I've not much experience of .243 but I've heard that all of the ballistic tipped rounds up to 75gr are pretty devasting against fox and small prey. As for the deer, all I can say is aim more accurately. You want the engine room not the shoulder. Edited August 1, 2015 by Alsone Quote Link to post
shropshire dan 467
Have to say I always used ballistic tips in the .22-250 and never had a runner excellent round. Quote Link to post
