14 Week Old Kit

Hi All

 

After some advice please i got a new hob kit this year at 8 weeks old was bought locally and all of his ferrets were well looked after and very tame, i have been handling him every day since i got him but the older he is getting the more he seems to not like being picked up and handled and is now always trying to turn to bite me, i am perservering with constant handling but as he is getting bigger he is going to hurt soon....

 

My older jills are no problem and wouldnt think of looking at my fingers.

 

Any ideas lads to stop him or will he hopefully grow out of it?

Keep at it its just a phase , they have loads of energy to burn off lol so don't want to be made a fuss of it will pass but keep up the handling Myne are on turbo at the min even after being fed : )

As stated, but try not to grab at him or pull away too much. Be confident and pick your moment when to pick up.

Give him a little bit of cat milk in a small pot to drink take the mind of nipping you and you can do what you want to them , well at leased till the milk runs out lol

when u say turn to bite you, im guessing your grabbing him from behind? try a different approach and scoop him instead might be less strartled

Fed him then handle him he's less likely to bite or have the energy to bite with a full stomached put the time in just now as with as much handling as you can ,but a good breeder would of done much of the hard work for you mate

you can spend as much time as you have,they maybe angels at 8 weeks but yours are now 14 weeks and they now have their adult teeth to try out on anything and everything LOL now is the time to persevere with handling, another 4 weeks and they'll be fully grown

I am trying him when he has fed/not fed etc, i can stroke him from head to tail when he is in the hutch and he starts arching his back and looking to pounce....lol...

Pick him up, if he bites, put him back in the cage, get him out 10 minutes later, same again. He will soon latch on to the idea, and not you, that biting means hard time, ferrets are not stupid, they know which side their bread is buttered, had a jill that got a bit over excited when the collars were going on, did the same thing to her, and bingo, third time out to put collars on she had got the message, try it.

I know what your saying but as soon as he is picked up he is only either trying to turn on me or wants to be put back in his cage....

Hes turning the head and protesting at being picked up but has he actually bit you yet ?. Reason i ask is that some ferrets go through a mouthing stage where even up till 3 or 4 months they will give a playful bite which can be hard but they very rarely break the skin. Keep handling him as suggested and start playing with him after a feed and tell him no when he bites too hard the way you would with a pup. Never have the the smell of food on your hands around kits as they dont know any better and they can latch on. And dont be afraid of them just pick them straight up and dont hesitate as they can sense fear lol. He will soon stop the messing. Best of luck.

When you pick him up if he does turn his head cram your knuckle in his mouth till he gags and releases it , a nip from a eight week out ferret won't hurt much and he should stop it within a week or two compared to a biting adult ferret

My two started doing similar. Fine in hutch and fine being picked up, let them loose for ten mins and they domt wana go back. As with JamieMs they go in turbo mode and dont wana be stopped. Not aggressive just sortof agited their play time is ending. Quick blow on the face and a NO stops em for now. I really need to get on wi building a court so they can burn off some energy.
