jonnie bravo 572
Ey up folks. I'm toying with the idea of getting my first fac gun. I want it to be of some use for close range fox work. Would a suitable .22 air rifle be as effective as .22 rimfire? I ask as I imagine that a .22 fac air would be more versatile as the land would not have to be cleared for rimfire etc. Sorry if this is a stupid question! Cheers for any constructive replies Quote Link to post
rodp 316
I've had foxes in front of .22 fac air, and I didn't pull the trigger, nor would I. 2 Quote Link to post
walshie 2,804
The land would have to be cleared for FAC air though and IMO it's not man enough for the job. Edited to add: I would also doubt the legality of it. Quote Link to post
rodp 316
And I would doubt it ! I do know if the anti's got hold of it they'd raise hell, and the rspca would try to have you sent down for about 1000 years 2 Quote Link to post
pianoman 3,587
Mink, Rat, Rabbit, Crow, Jackdaw, Jay, Ferral pigeon, Woodpigeon, Magpie, Squirrel. We have enough vermin as it is to shoot as such surely?I don't honestly know if it's actually illegal to shoot a fox with an air rifle but there is certainly a moral limit to this question? Certainly the RSPCA will have a case of animal cruelty against this as, there can be no solid evidence of a clean humane kill with every shot from an air rifle and, in any case you would have to get close to be effective and that's not likely to happen very much. Seriously, if you can get a firearms licence from the police for an air rifle, it won't be too hard to get one for a .22LR rimfire and ammo if your permission has the clearance from the police to permit you to shoot with one and do the job properly at least, if not humanely. And you can find a nicely sorted .22 rimfire rifle and scope for a lot less than a souped-up airgun. If Foxes are a pest on your permission why not ask the Police for a permit for a rifle?Next thing will be someone asking about shooting Muntjac deer with his HW100.NO! 5 Quote Link to post
jonnie bravo 572
Message received loud and clear gents, obviously a silly question. I'm sure I'd seen it being done on youtube by some renowned airgun mag I must be mistaken. Thanks for the replies. .22 rimfire it will be. 1 Quote Link to post

tomburras 2,730
Some forces don't even allow rimfire a to be used on fox! 2 Quote Link to post
J Darcy 5,871
Ineffective and not suitable. Get a proper rifle if you must shoot foxes. 3 Quote Link to post
David Aiken 253
FAC Air Rifles have come a long way, no power output was given, if he went for a larger calibre like one of theses: Sub 30 yards, in an area where a .22lr ect.. cant be used? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khrJwZLOn6s Quote Link to post

trenchfoot 4,243
I remember James Marchington writing in a review in Airgunner/airgun world that he did this with a FAC theoben gas ram gun, in an article in the 1980's Quote Link to post
