neil cooney 10,416
"A woman, a dog and a walnut tree, the more ye beat them the better they'll be." LOL, I'm not condoning domestic violence or beating a dog for one minute but that's an old rhyme and it was believe long ago that a walnut tree should be beaten every year to give a good harvest. At least with a tree it can't hit back or bite you.

bullmastiff 615
Don't think the nuts are as big and as said they go soft quick because of our damp, cool weather but yes its the same tree. I think the woods worth more than the turk is stuff though as it grows slower so gives a tighter more varied grain.

air gun ant 1,666
I have a lump of English walnut here that was given to me by a friend after his father died, he did some wood turning and gave me whatever wood was in his garage. I honestly havnt thought of anything I want to make out if it. It is so heavy and dense it's unreal!! I actually thought it was some kind of petrified wood but after speaking to the lad and him asking family & friends etc he found who gave it to him and the tree it was cut from, and I was told it was English walnut but it's nothing like Turkish walnut! Turkish walnuts a lovely wood and a pleasure to work with, like carving chocolate, and although I havnt done anything with this yet I'd imagine it's going to be like working with resin infused irroko! Lol
