I watched one of the qualifiers mate, can't remember who against but it was the last one........they were doing the old autopsy bit at the end saying "what's gone wrong with Irish football, why so t we producing players blah blah "........you know, the normal same as they do in England when we loose. I was almost screaming at the telly, it's bloody simple......GAA !! I never realised how big GAA was until I moved here but even in that short time, and getting involved with local football and seeing the crack, I can see that all the time football is running a very poor 3rd behind GAA football & hurling there will never be a team to be reckoned with from ireland. There are some really handy football players even at local level, but even they play with the "got to rush forward" mentality of GAA. I mean in England football is ALL we have and we still can't produce a team worth a f**k.

Not being funny mate im just asking because i dont know........but is gaa and hurling a new thing then ?.........i remember plenty of good Irish footballers from years gone by the Arsenal team of the late 70,s was full of them........wasnt gaa and hurling around back then as well ? WILF 47,360
No mate, of course it's not new, but if you see how massive it is at local level you realise how football would find it very hard to compete for "bodies" They are on you mate from the get go to get the kids playing........I mean an amature game has the 3rd biggest stadium in Europe !! Odd good players will of course always come through from any country but what they won't do is produce a small crop year after year......
Francie 6,368
Gaa an hurling are men's sports, not that crappy football lol

Ok then i guess what im asking is....has gaa/hurling suddenly become big where it wasnt before ?.........if gaa/hurling is the reason Ireland no longer produces good footballers then something has obviously changed.....no ? gnasher16 30,280
I hate to use such an over used word as " legend "......but look at the Irish legends of the game from the 60,s/ 70,s/ ,s like Best,Brady,Blanchflower,Giles,Jennings,Keane etc etc....theres nobody even remotely close to them in recent years.......i just cant see the connection with gaa/hurling if its always been popular. johnny boy68 11,726
We got a decent draw this time, if we continue improving the way we are we good do well. If Bale stays healthy we'll always have a chance.
