Blinkers are worn by horses to stop them noticing things on each side of the very narrow path they tread. Unfortunately, some humans seem to wear them as well, and they are usually put in place by similarly minded friends or a refusal to see the wider path.

I did give an opinion: a pup from parents and preferably grandparents as well which are/were doing the same job he wants a dog to do. So sorry if I sounded as though I was trying to be clever: I was just trying to say that it isn't wise to disregard all the other types of lurchers out there in favour of just one sort. And the best lurchers I've had have had a right mixture of breeds in them, but they've been bred from dogs doing what I wanted mine to do.

 

It just irritates me when someone says that a particular cross is the ONLY lurcher that takes all quarry when there are plenty of dogs without any Bull in them that are doing the job.

I DON'T like bull x's, I mean proper bull x, not something with a 16th or an 8th bull blood, and to say they are the only x that can do 'everything' is f***ing absurd! And if I was to go after fox regularly, not digging or around a hole, but lamping etc, a bull x would definitley NOT be on my list of types to consider

Nope nore mine mate !! Iv dug hunted the hill and landed foxes since a child and my bull x bitch has been outstanding for me but I'd not having another ! My collie xs are much more rounded bitches !! And I have been offered a pup from a many be litter of beddybullgreys x Pointergrey end of next year which depending how this Hancock shapes up I may take a pup from

Best "all rounder" ive ever seen was a gypsy bred dog my mate owned lurcher to lurcher bred with deerhound greyhound collie& bedlington in its make up 24" tts. Took everything back in the late 80's & cleverest dog ive ever seen hunt just knew where it had to be. Unfortunately he never sired any litters. Hope you find what your looking for & atb with pup when you do

I think its better to concentrate on something you like and breed carefully,which usually means you havnt time to mess with a diffrent type every other month of the year..but again this is only my opinion and and I dont say its law or that if you dont follow it you are stupid or blinkered in some way..but its what I think.

I couldn't agree more: there's no sense in keeping a dog if you don't like the type or it doesn't suit the way you do things, which is why I would never try and steer someone new to lurchers in any one direction. So much depends on how someone gets on with the mind set of a particular type of lurcher. I just prefer not to blind myself to the merits of any type, even if they aren't what I need in a lurcher. I don't need or want a straight bull cross, though some of mine have had bull in them. It's a minefield for anyone getting into lurchers for the first time.

I agree with that. Years ago you only had a few different traditional lurcher x's, collies of some sort, and terriers, beddies normally, and longdogs, deerhound/greyound or whippet/greyhound, and lurchers, lurcherwok and owners were better for it. Nowadays you've got gsd, dutch shepherds, malinois, salukis, airdales, wheatens, foxhound, pointer and not forgetting the BULL X!! And look at the shit that's been bred since these types have been around! I'm glad that these x's are now thankfully starting to get less popular, as people are realising that you won't really improve upon the tried and tested traditional types for most general types of lurcherwork.

Agree or not, but it's a fact that more and more people are going back to 'proper' lurchers. I'm expecting this to go down well with with owners of two types of certain x's!
