Ferret Kits. Being Messy

Recommended Posts

Just got the latest two kits a week ago I have found these two are more messy than other kits o have had most other kits have backed into corner to crap. These two aren't as clean there crapping everywhere even in middle of hutch. Anyone had this before ?

yes i had a white young hob that used to use its nest box as a toilet, never seen or owned another one like it,stuck with it for about a year, even made the sleeping quarters smaller, never stopped it,needless to say we parted company, the dirtiest ferret i ever bought in,dont know were its litter mates the same.

My jills used to be quite messy. Persaverence is the key. Gotta really scrub the poop of the areas where they are pooping that you don't want them too. Keep their corners clean but not immaculate. I think its the smell. If if smells like poop they'll poop there. But the corners needed to be kept kind of clean as any build up and they go somewhere else.

We used fleece blankets for their bedding, so we'd stick heaps in their bed so it got a good smell of 'bed' about it, then put them in areas where we didn't want them to go to the toilet.

It worked for us, your milage may vary. We just figured they don't poop where they sleep so we made everywhere that wasn't the toilet a bed. We also limited their space by blocking off some of their cage and taking out shelves, adding them back bit by bit once we were sure they weren't going to turn a new bit of cage into the terlet.

Hi guys Have you tried a strip of 1" weld mesh across the floor of the hutch at opposite end to the nest box, every ferret I have had uses this and most drops through. Sorry if i'm stating the obvious.

My dad built our ferret hutches like that with complete wire floors except for the bed area which was fine where he lived as the hens raked below the hutch scratching amongst the face aces and what ever else fell threw but when I bought he hutches to my house I cut plywood and used that to cover the wire as I didn't want the crap piling up under the hutch , but what I found was the wire was rotting with the acid in the urine and I had to replace it every few years

Thats true it does rot out after a few years,I just have about a 6" strip at one end. So I made it run in a grove so its removable and easy to replace but with a small piece of wood that locks it in. Being removable makes easy for cleaning . I cut the bottom off an old wire bread tray that lasted a lot longer, I think I will try and get some stainless mesh and try that. Also put a seed tray under this area with shavings or soil in it, then when wifey moans about the smell empty into compose bin.
