Kal 17
Hi, I'm going to be staying not far from Bridgewater Bay in Somerset in the next couple of weeks; can anyone recommend a good sea fishing mark? Thanks Edited July 22, 2015 by Kal Quote Link to post
Donna Wildwood 288
See alot of em at the very end of the road by Brean Down but dunno how good it is. If you fancy a go on the river I'm near Wedmore and will share my spots with you if you like? Quote Link to post
Kal 17
Hi, Thanks for that and apologies for the typo! Brean Down is further up - am only heading to the area for a couple of days; will be in and around Minehead/ Bridgewater...Im hoping to get a couple of hours fishing in if possible. Looking at the mark though, I can see why its probably a good place. Edited July 22, 2015 by Kal Quote Link to post
Kal 17
H Tim, Thanks for that - excellent advice and I will certainly make use of it! Am tempted to the Mrs and kids on the train whilst I go fishing but it probably won't go down well! There are plenty of options from your post and I may give the wall at Minehead a go. If I remember - I'll post an update. Cheers Kev (Kal is my initials) Quote Link to post
NEWKID 27,159
Great advice Timmy I've fished Lilstock a bit over the years, mainly in the winter for cod. As Timmy said, if you do walk out over the reef be very careful, the tide comes in very quickly and can leave you stranded. Get your tide times right and fish it down a couple of hours and only up for a couple of hours. You can lose a lot of gear there but there's a good chance of a decent fish or 2.. Good luck mate Quote Link to post
Kal 17
Thanks for the advice - will definitely take that on board! It sounds like fishing hide tide down is the safest option for Lilstock...and probably on a neap. Quote Link to post

It sounds like fishing hide tide down is the safest option for Lilstock...and probably on a neap. You cant get far enough along the reef until half way through the ebb mate, you need to be right along under the look out tower or you'll lose a lot of gear, fish up tide with a big bow in your line (walk up the tide and cast then walk back letting a bow out) bites will be drop backs ( sorry if I'm teaching you to suck eggs). the safest place is the pipe, like Tim said you need to hit at least 100 yards to be on clean ground. You will lose gear here!! Pulley rigs, straight through with rotten bottoms are best. 1 Quote Link to post
Kal 17
"( sorry if I'm teaching you to suck eggs)".. No problem - good advice is always worth taking on board! If I'm not sure enough about the mark I'll play safe and go to the Anchor.. Thanks Kev Quote Link to post
Kal 17
Feedback: The bad new is that I was unable to take my beach fishing gear with me due to lack of space in the car, so opted for light travel rod, Not ideal but I hoped to make the best of it. I had hoped that there would be a place where I could fish from a harbour wall or similar, however as it turned out, the only realistic option was Lilstock. So I had a couple of attempts at fishing from the shore using a float rig...haven't tried this before and I wasn't sure if it would work at all. 1st attempt didn't go well as I tried to fish across the bay on the ebb tide from the far right end of the shore, in choppy conditions and with a head-wind...not a good idea. 2nd attempt was 1 hour either side of hide tide by the outfall pipe in calmer conditions. I didn't catch but did manage to put a floating rig out at 20 - 30 yards and allow it to gently trot round in an arc; re-casting every 2 - 3 minutes. I've no idea how close to the shore fish come in at this mark, but have regularly caught inside 50 yards at other locations - including 3lb bass in 2 ft of water, so would assume it to be similar at this location. I only managed to get around 3hrs fishing in due to time constraints which is a shame. A positive from the experience was learning how to use a float rig from the shore - something I'd like to try again. 1 Quote Link to post
Kal 17
Hi Tim, I was using squid - so it would have been quite a good scent, + I fished close to the bottom. I'd heard that Minehead was good and Porlock too, but we were in a village outside of Bridgewater and there wouldn't have been the time. We also had no internet access - hence not online! But thanks for the offer of the rods! It's a lovely area and I'd love to go back. Technically I found either side of high tide quite do-able with a float, as long as the tide isn't too choppy. It was worth a go - (better than not getting out at all) and has given me a few ideas for other areas. I did repay my other half by giving them a surprise trip up and down Porlock Hill - so that compensated for the lack of fishing time! Kev Quote Link to post
NEWKID 27,159
Top man Tim. Quote Link to post
NEWKID 27,159
Unlucky on the fishing Kai, like Tim said you'll struggle there on a float, but better to be out than in.. Quote Link to post
Kal 17
Thanks for that...a case of making the best of the situation. Would like to try Porlock Weir if I get the chance...looks like another good venue. Quote Link to post
