Gypsy Or Traveller

Recommended Posts

When I first got into lurchers about 30+ years back, there were a few sites around my area but all settled people with the odd visitors now and then.

Some had chalets, some proper trailers with all the bling, some just tourers.

We never saw a Vardo lol

They were all referred to with a certain amount of deference as the travelling lads even though some were born there 30 years ago :D

New Age Travellers? Well they were just "Crustys" lol

Cheers, D.

your welcome to come and have a day out with me with the dogs and my family if you want , and although a lot of the proper old ways are dying out ( mind you same could be said for society in general)

A couple of my dad's best mates were settled travellers (both now deceased). I think coming from Yorkshire to the southeast in the 60's & being an outsider, he naturally gravitated towards travellers through running dogs & horses......

The way my dad lived his life & the fact that he then went on to take us (his family) on to Africa & Asia meant we learnt from a young age there's was more to life than just 'us & them'

It's really fascinating to read this stuff from an educated man who knows what he's talking about, rather than the chest-puffing "I'll fight you" pish you hear from the travelling wannabes.

Certainly refreshing i know that much ....Marshman seems just about the classiest Gypsy ive ever come across.......oh no thats right im not cool enough to know a real gypsy !
Nothing like being uncool before it was cool to be uncool

The Oxford English dictionary ( O.E.D.)is very clear and concise in its definitions of each individual group .

Gypsies ...an ethnic sub culture of robbing b*****ds .

travellers (Irish ) ....a group of robbing b*****ds ,who ironically don't travel and have an ancient culture of making utube vids advocating the practise of steeping hands in petrol and defacating in buckets ,they often end these videos with the words ,""ye Shiite ye "

New age travellers ...a homeless gathering of drug addicts who are strongly opposed to the use of soap and water .

Can't argue with the O.E.D .atb
