Tiercel 6,986
Since I cleaned the shed out about three weeks ago, I have been itching to get back to some woodworking I found some blocks of Merrante (?spelling) Sapele, Iroko and enough Oak to make one needle. So this week I have been making copies of a Loomis 10" needle. TC 6 Quote Link to post

Mr Goodcat 69
Nice one mate, they look cracking. Did you find the Iroko irritated your airways? I've only ever used it the once, but I had to wear a dust mask because breathing became a nightmare and I couldn't stop coughing and sneezing. Quote Link to post

I wear a dust mask when routing and sanding the sapele and the Iroko they are murder for dust. The Iroko is quite brittle as well. TC Quote Link to post

TC I'm always kitted out when sanding ect, but this was the first cut with a chopsaw. The piece was of a decent size admittedly but I'v never had any wood do that to me before,it's like my lungs were allergic to that specific type. Very odd. Quote Link to post

Tiercel 6,986
Had a read up myself, surprising how many woods are toxic. http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/wis30.pdf Page 4 on TC Edited July 23, 2015 by tiercel 1 Quote Link to post
Mr Goodcat 69
Bugger!I wish I never read that... Cheers! Lol But on a more serious note, it shows that even a lump of harmless looking timber can have an adverse effect. 1 Quote Link to post
