Kennel Run

am working on a kennel, am limited to what work i can get done in the garden. ive got a hut built at the moment am converting that should be straight foward, insulation, heat lamp

 

my problem is going to be the run, dont think the landlord will allow me to dig out foundations for a small brick wall to build the run on.. ive never done any cement/brick work before, will i be able to lay the bricks say 2 high on top of the slabs??

 

if so they would be also on a slight slope, ideal for the run off hole, might be more awkward for brick work??

 

am doing this on a tight budget, the idea is to has the kennel run available on days when ill be out instead of leaving dugs in the house when i cant take them and when the bitch is in season it will become ones digs

 

any help, other ideas would be appreciated

Mate, build a wooden frame for the base as such and then pour cement in

it would still need brick/block to build the run on.. to stop water rotting the wood?

Just put paving slabs down. Not ideal, but better than nothing and easily moved if need be.

am using slabs, i just didnt want to sit the run ontop of the slabs were water etc from cleaning would rot it quicker. thinking about the brick/blocks set ontop of the slab to protect the frame and have the slabs in the centre for the base

My runs are on top.of slabs just have them raised a bit to let water run out when washing

lay slabs, then lay a single brick in each corner, maybe even one half way between each corner them, little bed under bricks and once dried them put run ontop of bricks that way water will run under but if you use summat like a single engineers brick then not even a young pup could squeeze under. Most galv panels have wee feet at bottom tho of that's what's your using for run

 

sounds like a plan, going to butcher another hut ive left over for part of the run, repair/clean up and use roof/one side and back panel. might try weld something together with a door for the front, or maybe use one of those herris fence panels with the door, fitted into wooden frame.

 

how much space do you guys recommend for the sleeping area, i read somewhere better to make it smaller to help keep it warmer?

just make the slabs run to the front of the run (or whatever direction is best) then put a channel drain in running off either into the main drains or a french drain.

Don't use Harris fencing it's shite and the mesh breaks of at the welds if your using the panels take of the mesh and put it onto a better frame works and for the sleeping area on the entrance for the dog uses get some clear off cut plastic curtain material it keeps a lot of draught out and make sure you put a door for your self too change the dog beds or material you use also and on the inside after you've put in the insulation you can get white pvc sheets they make cleaning a lot easier on the inside and prevents the dog from chewing the framing or you could use them metal corner things they use and also on the inside it's handy too have the beds raised if you can just slightly higher the dog entrance also for the flooring if you don't want too lay slabs or a concrete base which is the easiest and cheapest you could build a metal floor with legs then buy some rubber flooring mats there about £30 a metre square

Was thinking about using the current hut door, just halfing it.. and use that when needed, just means ill need to walk though the run. Afew good ideas, like idea about the mesh, would also look better removed from the frame cheers

for the insulation can i use the stuff they put on the outside of houses then haral?( think its called firebrick), maybe just half them... i can get aload for nothing, if they are ok to use, would be ideal lol
