My boy who is 7 has learned loads of Irish as they have to do it in school, amazing how quick they pick it up.......personally, I do t have a clue what he is on about !! But it's good to hear him do i

Do you know Dai Jones? Aye butt he lives just down the road he does(though just down the road means anything upto 10 miles.) ?Also we always ask things twice...Is that your dog is it butt.

Really, we English are spoilt with our language dominating world business and being the first language of so many other 1st world countries. Our ancestor's empire days still benefiting usin that respect.

I hated languages at school but now if I was to broaden myself in such a way I'd quite like to be able to speak Russian, for some reason. Learning Latin would be fascinating too.

They tried to drum Latin in to me at school, and failed miserably. Just cannot absorb languages.

They tried French with me, I was awful and hated it. Preferred German, which seems more logical to a English speaker but wasn't allowed to continue with it so forced to fail with the French instead.

Just as an adult, Latin seems interesting.

I learnt Latin at school for 5 years. The way it is put together kind of makes sense, but what's the point of learning a dead language?

What's the point in studying anything from the past? To learn how we got to where we are, no?

Latin was once the language of academia, and still crops up in modern science. Even the English language has Latin derivatives.

The fact that it's a dead language sort of shows the 'academic purity' in learning it, I guess I would say, like any historical language or text. It's useless from a conventional language point of view, as you imply.

Public school boy ;) ,now we understand

Lol. Not a public school. A very old-fashioned regular grammar school.

Learning Latin has been a great advantage. It comes in handy if I ever need to go to ancient Rome,
