bugsafari 0
Dogs dew claw is pointing at a "nine" o'clock position,it has been virtualy ripped right at the base towards the leg, it has stopped bleeding and flushing out with Salt water, wont keep a bandage on. Should I let it heal on its own or a vet job? Dog is squealing in pain when he licks or catches it and wont let me touch it.

If possible ask for removal of both. They'll be healed within a few weeks and you'll have no more bother for the rest of the dogs life.
bullmastiff 615
Tess ripped hers a few times. First time she split the nail straight through. Got the remains of the nail off she was fine after that and it all grow back fine, second time she split it again but the nail wouldnt come off, that took awhile to heal but didnt cause her much discomfort. Next time she broke the bone itself. Took her the vets with that one as it was causing her pain. Got quoted £280 to have them off!! Found another vet that did it for £150 so had them off. Obviously no more issues...

maxwell 88
Dew claws nothing but a pain in the --se, don't know why people don't remove them when pups are a few days old saves all the problems later on in life, cant get my head around people who say they should be left on what use are they
Jamie Legg 0
i have heard that they help dogs climb, however ironically my dog ripped his right back climbing!eventually it had got to the point it was ready to come off and just needed a little tug, my dogs pretty good and was fine with it. its not grown back and im fine with that. obviously assess how much its going to bleed though and let the initial wound scab up a little first. Dewclaw69 484
no sense in dewclaws for a working dog. like said before, easily nipped off at a couple of days old. more trouble than they're worth
