trenchfoot 4,243
I've a pond, 40m x 30m ish. There were no fish to start, but put in a couple of dozen golden orfe from the local garden centre when they were cheep at the back end of the summer. They thrived and are breeding. the beauty is you can see them easily and are very tolerant of conditions. once it was obvious they were doing well, I started to add a mix of coarse fish from a local supplier

comanche 2,944
Tench are good. You'll probably rarely see them but neither will the herons. what a great opportunity to source some pure(as opposed to the mongrel goldfish that are so common these days) crucians and help an endangered species. You won't need many as they will breed like stink without too many competing species and you may be able to cream off some to sell as a way of reducing the population before they start to get stunted .
pie-eater 377
I stocked a pond about 18 years ago. Nice size pond, its actualy a ww2 bomb crater, I put in 23 wild carp as well as a few rudd and roach. A couple of years later there was hundreds of tiny carp and I realised I should have chucked a few predators in there like pike or perch to keep the small ones down, so I put in a little jack pike which I doubt made much of a difference. It seems to have balanced out now, although the rudd disappeared. I often see a heron take off as I approach so I think hes thinning out the small fish. If I was going to do it again Id probably go with much fewer wild carp, a few perch crucians tench and roach.
keepdiggin 9,559
Piranhas would keep the mink down. Tench, rudd and perch. water would be to cold for piranhas I think mate
