Dog Show and Raceday in Rathnew Co Wicklow Sunday 5th July 15

Rathnew, is a village in Co Wicklow, located south of the capital of Dublin, along the M11 between Dublin and Wexford. As it was Charity Dog Show day down there in the beautiful garden of Ireland, we were up with the dawn chorus at 5.15am. With our car loaded up, we headed down the motorway to Rathnew. There were no wrong turns this year, as David Dickenson and his good wife Marie, had the venue well sign posted. Very soon Mrs Sat Nav with her dolcit tones, informed us we had arrived at our destination safe and early.

The racing began at approximately 11.30am . The racing is a little different than we would have up North. If you wished to race your dog, you paid 2 euro and away you go, and the winners received a small monetary prize at the finishing line. This was a great bit of craic and created some laughter and excitement. I must say it was very relaxing to watch, and I really enjoyed this part of the show immensely . Well done to the Dunphy family who run the racing to perfection.

There was a chip van, toilet facilities, a bird of prey to entertain the children, and a very good PA system on site. The weather was not totally in our favour, but there were some good spells of sunshine, in between the very heavy showers.

I met up with some lovely people yesterday, some old friends and also made some new ones. Quite a few Northern folk came down to support this worthy cause. I met up with Peter Morgan along the way. As usual, Peter had some top class terriers with him and went home with a couple of bags of nuts to feed the Terriers for the week. Mickey and Michael Quinn from Lurgan was there too. Lady done Mickey proud again coming first in the bull class and Tara done Michael proud coming 2nd in the Whippet bitch class. Ryan O Neill came all the way down from Strabane in County Tyrone to enjoy a day out in County Wicklow. Quite a few Dublin huntsmen were there with their loyal canine friends. These dogs all show in the Summer and work in the feld in the winter.

Racing started at 11.30am, followed by the showing at 1.30pm.

***A big Congratulations to Peter Cummins on winning Overall Show Champion and Best in show with his beautiful Lurcher Harry ***

**Overall Whippet Champion went to : Irra Rodgers with Rocky

**Overall Lurcher went to Peter Cummins with Harry

**Overall Terrier went to Cullen Mc Grath with Harry

***Overall Puppy Champion went to Karen Cummins with Ben

A big congratulations to all the winners and well done.

And Finally, I would like to thank the judges as requested by David Dickinson , for carrying out your remit so diligently on the day.

Lurchers : John Moriarity/ Whippets : Margaret Mc Stay/ Terriers : John Hendrix/ Pets : Niall O Calloghan and Aisling Carey.

Many thanks for a job well done.

Bluebell ( Deidre Mc Coy ) was there in full swing with her camera recording all our moments of glory. Deidre, what would we do without you . Had some great laughs with you there yesterday. The photographs are up on Dog Shows in Ireland and on my timeline.

We cannot forget our sponsors , Mr Albertj Titterington who sponsored £50 for the Overall whippet

Alan Hunter Crosbie and Tracy Crosbie, who kindly donated the Glass engraved trophys

Frankie Sports in Wicklow Town for engraving the "Art Dickenson Memorial Cup", which was presented to the Champion Lurcher by Dorothy Dickenson, in memory of her late husband Arthur.

Every single shop and business within Wicklow who kindly donated towards the charity, the organisers are truly grateful.

And Finally, Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank most sincerely David Dickinson, his wife Marie, daughter April, my ring stuart Paula, and family, and all loyal band of helpers on the day, for a great family day out at this charity dog show. I know there were some sleepless nights before the show, and a lot of hard work and organisation input. But everything went like clockwork on the day, well organised, and was a credit to the Dickenson family.

It is also nice to know that Wicklow Cancer Support Group will benefit from all our loyal Canine friends showing their pedigrees off on the day to the value of 1,333 Euro . Definitely a man and womans best friend in every sense of the word.

Hopefully the revenue generated at this show on Sunday will help ease the pain and suffering of some individuals in need of help or on their way, departing from this life. All Cancer support groups are dedicated people we could not do without, and deserve a helping hand along the way

David we all enjoyed ourselves down there in Co Wicklow on Sunday. Many thanks for the beautiful Bouquet of flowers and silver placque you presented to me. Your generosity knows no bounds, and I appreciate it so much. I must say I really enjoyed judging at your show, and I am looking forward to next years show already.

PLEASE NOTE : FROM THE PEN OF MARGARET Mc STAY
      DATE : 10.3.25
AFTER HAVING A VERY ABUSIVE AND DISTRESSING PHONE CALL THIS MORNING AT 8.25am FROM SOMEONE WHO SENT ME AND ASKED ME TO PUT A WINNING PHOTOGRAPH UP ON MY SITE OF A VERY WORTHY WINNING PERSON AT CRUFTS, UNFORTUNATELY THERE WERE SOME VERY UNSAVOURY COMMENTS MADE UNDER MY POST. THAT POST HAS NOW BEEN TAKEN DOWN.
AS I SAID BEFORE AND I WILL SAY IT AGAIN, I LOVE COUNTRY SPORTS AND HAVE DEDICATED A BIG PART OF MY  LIFE FOR OVER 30 YEARS  DOING EVERYTHING I CAN TO BETTER THE SPORT. WHEN SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAPPENS, AND THANKFULLY IT DOES NOT HAPPEN VERY OFTEN, IT PULLS ME DOWN TO THE DEPTHS. I TAKE MY OWN PHOTOGRAPHS  AT OUR SHOWS AND DO MY WRITEUPS IN A PROPER MANNER AND WOULD NEVER CRITICIZE OR BRUTALISE THE HARD WORK THAT ALL OUR SHOW ORGANISERS PUT INTO GETTING THEIR SHOWS ON THE ROAD.
HAVIING SAID ALL OF THIS, I  MUST NOW  STRESS, ANY DEROGATORY OR HURTFUL REMARKS THAT IS MADE BY ANY INDIVIDUAL UNDER ANY OF MY POSTS WILL BE TAKEN DOWN IMMEDIATELY.  IF UNSAVOURY POSTS NEED TO BE MADE, PLEASE MAKE THEM ON YOUR OWN SITES AND NOT IN MY NAME, AS THE VERBAL ABUSE I HAVE TO TAKE IS NOT NICE, AND ESPECIALLY TO SOMEONE WHO ONLY  DOES GOOD FOR THE SPORT.
AS WE KNOW COUNTRY SPORTS IS BEING PULLED THROUGH THE MUCK AT THE MOMENT,  WE AS PEOPLE HAVE THE  POWER, SO FOR THE GOOD OF COUNTRY  SPORTS  TRY AND PULL TOGETHER  AND HELP EACH OTHER OUT, AND WE WILL WIN IN THE  END. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CONTINUE TO POST YOUR COMMENTS ON MY SITE AS LONG AS THEY ARE STRAIGHT AND CLEAN AND FOR THE GOOD OF THE SPORT.

A TRIBUTE TO THE LATE JIMMY SCOTT, A TOP DOGGIE MAN IN OUR COUNTRY SPORTS FRATERNITY, WHO LEFT THIS WORLD ON Christmas Day.   I Am Free Do not grieve for me now my friends and family, I am free. I am following the path God Laid for me. I took his hand when I heard him call, I turned my back and left it all.   I could not stay another day to show, to live , to hunt, to fish or play. I found my peace at close of day. Be not burdened with this time of sorrow I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. Perhaps my time seemed all to brief. Do not lengthen it now with undue grief.   Lift up your hearts my friends and share with me. God wanted me now, He set me free.   From all in Country Sports Margaret Mc Stay

The Combined Clubs Dog Show and Northern Ireland Champion of Champions Saturday 7thSeptember 24
Laurencetown is famous for its green fields, ancient buildings, walled gardens and extensive lawns stretching down to the River Bann. But as well as these famous landmarks, Laurencetown can add another string to its bow by adding the annual Combined Clubs Dog Show and Northern Ireland Champion of Champions to its attractions and venue.
Saturday was one of the warmest days of the year with the sun shinning down continuously. I got burned alive but all well worth it. Our Country Sportsmen, women and children came out to this now annual dog show to enjoy the last days of the summer sunshine.
Our summer Dog shows have become canine excursions from all parts of the country North and South of the Border. Saturday was no exception with a good turnout of Terriers, Lurchers, Whippets and Strong dogs.
And wait for it, the big surprise of the day and what a pleasant surprise that was. The McGrath Racing Club arrived unexpectedly for a family day out to support the show. And guess what they acted on the spot with an impromptu few races to the joy of many of the racing fraternity at the show.
The childrens handling class was first on the list and judged by Marian Cree. What a turnout of children in the ring on Saturday. I can still see the smile on Clodagh Gentle face on winning 1st with her   Whippet Clive. These young boys and girls are our sportsmen and women of tomorrow. I have no doubt in my mind that these little people will carry on the sport after our day. Well done Marian and congratulations to all.
